Overview of the Principal Lawyer - Commercial Law role:

Sellick Partnership is excited to be partnered with one of our highly regarded public sector clients to recruit a Principal Lawyer or Head of Law to manage the commercial contracts team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a qualified Solicitor/Lawyer to join this organisation as part of the Senior Leadership Team. The successful Principal Lawyer will steer a well-respected Commercial Law team with clients across the public sector, alongside building business strategy and identifying potential new clients.

This is a hybrid working role with office presence required twice a week. Offices are located across the East of England with flexibility as to which office you would be preferred to be based.

This role will support the Executive Director and other colleagues by contributing to the overall management of the team including staff performance, financial compliance and practice management. You may also be required to deputise for the Executive Director where required. This truly is a fantastic opportunity to lead a successful Commercial Law team from the top, to hold influence and help guide this organisation forward whilst steering the new generations of lawyers coming through the ranks all whilst developing your own career and expertise in a senior management role.

We are looking for a qualified Solicitor/Lawyer with extensive public sector commercial contracts and procurement experience.

Main accountabilities of the Principal Lawyer - Commercial Law include:

  • Managing the Commercial Law team, providing assistance to fee earners whilst developing and maintaining relationships with clients.
  • Managing and dealing with challenges or concerns that may arise across the service.
  • Provide high quality, innovative and practical legal advice to a wide range of clients alongside elected members and senior officers.
  • Managing complex caseloads of contracts and procurement law; delivering advice and support in a timely manner.
  • Leading and managing a team of professional legal staff both qualified and non-qualified, ensuring they have the support, tools and knowledge to provide excellent client care.
  • Lead on the development of existing business relationships whilst seeking out new external clients though identification, marketing and promoting the service.

Key competencies for the Principal Lawyer - Commercial Law will include:

  • We are looking for a strong, supportive leader to work collaboratively with their team and wider stakeholders.
  • The successful applicant will be a confident and client focused communicator, acting as subject expert, providing credible, pragmatic advice to officers whilst mentoring junior members of the team.
  • You will also demonstrate commercial awareness to contribute to the strategic growth of the team and wider organisation.

Key requirements for the Principal Lawyer - Commercial Law:

  • Applicants are required to be a qualified Solicitor/Lawyer in England or Wales OR a member of the BAR, having completed pupillage.
  • Applicants will also have legal expertise across both contentious and non-contentious contract and procurement law.
  • Previous experience of leading and managing a team is essential.
