AJ Bell Business Solutions Limited in the UK is seeking a Principal Information Security Engineer to provide technical leadership across the security engineering team. The role supports the manager by delivering high‑quality governance and hands‑on security delivery.

You will lead day‑to‑day security engineering, collaborate with architecture and operations, implement enterprise security platforms, and mentor engineers. Hybrid working with at least 50% time in the Manchester office is offered.

Qualifications

• Experience with ISO 27001, NIST, or similar frameworks.
• Minimum 5 years in information security roles, preferably in financial services or e‑commerce.
• CISSP certification in progress or achieved.

Responsibilities

• Act as primary technical escalation point for the team.
• Oversee day‑to‑day security engineering delivery and BAU.
• Maintain quality and consistency of engineering outputs.
• Support delivery of security tooling roadmap.

Job description

Due to growth within our security engineering department we are looking for a Principal Information Security Engineer to join the team. The role supports the Senior Information Security Engineering Manager by providing technical leadership and oversight across the team.

This role is responsible for day‑to‑day technical execution, ensuring that project engagements are delivered to a high standard and that support activities meet organisational SLAs.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as the primary technical escalation point for the team, providing guidance and decision‑making for complex challenges.
• Oversee day‑to‑day execution of security engineering, ensuring BAU work is delivered to high standards and team SLAs met.
• Maintain the quality and consistency of engineering outputs, aligning projects, tasks, and documentation with security standards.
• Support technical delivery of the security tooling roadmap to bridge high‑level strategy and operational outcomes.
• Work closely with the Information Security Architecture team to validate design concepts, ensuring solutions are robust, scalable, and fit for the enterprise.
• Collaborate with the Information Security Operations team to drive operational efficiency and quality improvements, integrating controls across the estate.
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to the engineering team to deliver secure, automated, and effective solutions.

Technical Skills

• Experience implementing enterprise security platforms.
• Hands‑on experience with Microsoft security stack.
• Managing and securing diverse end‑user compute environments (Windows, macOS, Linux, mobile).
• Knowledge of firewalls and cloud security solutions.
• Experience with email/web gateways, PAM, IGA, SIEM, endpoint protection.
• Familiarity with information security risk management tools and techniques.
• Understanding of control standards and frameworks.
• Experience with automation and scripting.

Competence & Qualifications

• Experience within recognised information security frameworks (ISO 27001, NIST, etc.).
• Minimum 5 years experience in an information security role, preferably in financial services or e‑commerce.
• Attained or working towards CISSP certification.
