Overview

Public Health Principal - Health Inequalities — Reference: Dudley 119846. Pay rate: £400 per day PAYE, TBC. Contract Type: Temporary, Anticipated 6 to 12 months. Working Arrangement: Hybrid working.

The role: On behalf of a local council, we are seeking a Consultant in Public Health Inequalities with a strong and demonstrable understanding of interfaces between health, social care and key partners (dealing with wider determinants of health), along with an excellent understanding of the public sector duty and the inequality duty and their application to public health practice.

Qualified as a public health specialist and be on the GMC, GDC or UKPHR specialist register and maintain registration according to UKPHR/GMC rules.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide public health expertise to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities.
  • Deliver action, influence, and advice to the Council, NHS, and wider system partners.
  • Support the Director of Public Health (DPH) in statutory public health responsibilities.
  • Oversee management of resources and staff within public health.
  • Drive innovative solutions and continuous improvement in health and wellbeing.
  • Influence organisational budgets and advocate effectively for change.
  • Lead workforce development and embed public health approaches across the Council.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and change management skills in a senior role.
  • Operate across all domains of public health: health protection, improvement, intelligence, and healthcare public health.
  • Work with the organisation and consultants to improve resident wellbeing and deliver statutory duties.
  • Take responsibility for a strategic objective of the local authority and Health & Wellbeing Board.
  • Act as a change agent to deliver public health, NHS, and social care outcome indicators.
  • Lead cross-organisational collaboration to reduce inequalities and promote community-based approaches.
What the client is looking for
  • Qualified as a public health specialist and be on the GMC, GDC or UKPHR specialist register and maintain registration according to UKPHR/GMC rules.
  • Applicants must meet minimum CPD requirements (i.e. be up to date) in accordance with Faculty of Public Health requirements or other recognised body
  • MFPH by examination, by exemption or by assessment, or equivalent
  • Strong and demonstrable understanding of interfaces between health, social care and key partners (dealing with wider determinants of health)
  • Understanding of the public sector duty and the inequality duty and their application to public health practice
  • Able to influence senior members including directors and CEOs
  • Able to both lead teams and to able to contribute effectively in teams led by junior colleagues
  • Commitment to work within a political system irrespective of personal political affiliations
  • Experienced in the delivery of successful change management programmes across organizational boundaries
  • Media experience demonstrating delivery of effective health behaviour or health promotion messages
  • Experience of using complex information to explain public health issues to a range of audiences
