Job Description:

Full Time, Permanent

Bristol is an ambitious, global, and diverse city, and the City Council is committed to building a better Bristol that includes everyone in the city’s success.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join Bristol City Council’s Natural and Marine Environment Team in a lead Health and Safety role that oversees some of Bristol’s most high-profile services, including cemeteries and crematoria, marine harbour operations, docks engineering, formal parks, play areas, nature reserves, sports facilities, leisure and catering facilities, and retail plant nursery.

Alongside managing daily operations, the role involves undertaking major projects and planned programmes to maintain and improve the quality and safety of the natural and marine environment.

The aim is to ensure the delivery of safe, secure public services. You will collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure a safe environment for service users, staff, contractors, and residents.

This is a rare opportunity to lead and be part of a dedicated team providing some of the most important and visible services in Bristol.

We are looking for someone with:
  • Demonstrable experience in a health and safety environment, with working knowledge of operational H&S legislation, ideally with marine, operational engineering, and parks operation experience.
  • The ability to work with delivery teams and managers critically and constructively, challenging staff and contractors’ performance to meet high safety standards.
  • Experience in conducting audits and inspections of operational activities, contractors, and workplaces to verify legislative compliance.
  • Risk management methodology, calculation, and reporting experience.
  • Experience in developing and delivering health, safety, and wellbeing compliance programmes.

We seek a motivated and passionate individual committed to addressing health, safety, and wellbeing issues, comfortable working in a dynamic, developing environment.

The role is predominantly workplace-based, across service area offices and various natural and marine environment sites.

Why Bristol City Council?

We offer a fast-paced, supportive work environment where you can develop your skills within a high-profile organization. Hybrid working arrangements are available, allowing flexibility between home and office work.

Join us to enjoy an excellent rewards package, including flexible working and flexitime, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme, and a generous annual leave allowance. Contribute to making Bristol a better place and be part of its future.
