About the role

Balfour Beatty is currently seeking a Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join their Power T&D team.

Background does not have to be within High Voltage Power industry, as the delivery of construction design management is transferable. Our stakeholders, clients, and engineering teams respect good quality leadership and the willingness to achieve the project goals.

This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic, passionate individual who has a strong background in Geotechnical Engineering.

Role purpose

To take responsibility for the design delivery and suitability of works across Power T&D construction projects, with a focus on Overhead Line (OHL) foundations and geotechnical delivery.

Work with project teams, designers, and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver safe and suitable scope of works in line with project objectives.

Provide advice on constructability and sequencing of civil design and temporary works designs for Power T&D.

Support geotechnical aspects across PT&D workstreams.

Engage in bid development, tendering, and innovation projects alongside the Team Lead and Design Delivery Manager.

What you'll be doing

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead and manage a section of the Geotechnical and OHL foundation design team.
  • Undertake design and coordination of foundation and geotechnical designs on OHL, Cabling, and Substation projects, from feasibility to detailed design and installation, supporting temporary works design as needed.
  • Ensure timely delivery and high quality of designs, reports, calculations, and drawings compliant with standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
  • Understand and incorporate client requirements, including implicit ones, contributing to robust pricing and delivery solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and identify design and temporary works requirements, driving a Safety by Design approach.
  • Lead civil project designs including reinforced concrete, ground risk assessments, tower capacity, site design, slope stability, and geotechnical management.
  • Maintain compliance with CDM regulations and legal standards.
  • Perform technical quality assurance reviews and design approvals.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Assist in tender processes, scope interpretation, and providing advice.
  • Guide and upskill team members, supporting engineering design delivery and software use.
  • Support in managing output and delivery of design drawings.
  • Contribute to team objectives, strategy, and requirements.

Who we're looking for

Skills Required:

  • Management experience
  • Degree in civil or geotechnical engineering or equivalent

  • Post-graduate civil engineering experience
