Job description

Tetra Tech is looking for a Principal Geo-environmental Consultant in Birmingham to Shape the ground risk strategy behind complex, high-value projects that influence how places are planned, designed and delivered.

Purpose and Scope of the Role

As a Principal Geo-environmental Consultant, you will play a leading role within the Ground Risk and Remediation team, supporting a broad portfolio of medium and large-scale projects across renewable energy, transport, property, residential and water sectors. You will lead the delivery of geo-environmental work from desk studies and feasibility support through to planning, design and construction, acting as a key point of contact for clients, project teams and regulators.

The role combines technical leadership, project management and client engagement. You will oversee project delivery, manage budgets ranging from a few thousand pounds to several hundred thousand pounds, support work winning activity and provide practical, risk-based advice on contamination, remediation and ground investigation. You will also contribute to the development of a collaborative, high-performing team, with line management responsibility for two to three technical staff.

Your Impact in this Position

In the short term, you will build trusted relationships with clients and internal teams, take ownership of live projects and strengthen delivery controls across time, cost and quality.

In the medium term, you will help grow repeat business, broaden your exposure to major multidisciplinary work and take a stronger role in shaping project strategy and technical direction.

Over the longer term, this role offers clear progression with the opportunity to develop into a trusted technical leader, expand your influence across the business and support future growth across multiple sectors.

Technical Geo-environmental Expertise

You will bring strong, demonstrable experience in UK geology, contaminated land assessment, land quality assessment, site investigation, chemical testing and remediation strategy development. You will be confident providing robust technical advice and producing clear, defensible outputs for clients and regulators. Experience of engineering geology and assessment of geohazards would be advantageous.

Project Leadership and Delivery

You will manage geo-environmental projects from start to finish, maintaining delivery, budgets and programme while balancing technical quality and commercial awareness. You will make sound decisions, resolve issues early and keep projects moving with minimal supervision.

Stakeholder and Client Engagement

You will act as a credible point of contact for clients, contractors, regulators and internal colleagues, building confidence through clear communication and responsive delivery. You will support meetings, manage expectations and help strengthen long-term client relationships.

Reporting, Review and Technical Assurance

You will prepare and review technical reports, including contaminated land risk assessments and remediation strategies, ensuring outputs are accurate, concise and suitable for presentation to clients and regulatory bodies. You will maintain high standards of quality and consistency across all deliverables.

Leadership, Mentoring and Business Development

You will support the development of junior colleagues through coaching, feedback and practical guidance, while contributing to proposals, repeat business and wider team growth. You will bring a collaborative approach that supports both capability-building and commercial success.

Qualifications and Training

You will ideally be chartered with a relevant professional body or as a minimum be an existing member of a relevant professional organisation working towards chartered status, and hold substantial experience in geo-environmental consultancy, with a strong focus on contaminated land, risk assessment and remediation. A relevant degree in a suitable earth, environmental or engineering discipline is expected.

An interest in the capture, interpretation and presentation of digital data would be an advantage to provide synergy with our current ambition to lead on accuracy and efficiency in this field.

Work Patterns and Locations

This role is based in Birmingham and follows a hybrid working model. Regular office attendance is expected to support collaboration, team development and client engagement, alongside ad hoc site visits and meetings.
