Job summary

Tetra Tech is hiring a Geo-environmental Engineer based in Derby to support design, procurement, supervision and delivery of geotechnical and geo-environmental investigations across the UK.

You will contribute to site characterisation, data collection and reporting, ensuring projects are delivered to high technical standards. A full driving licence and willingness to travel, including overnight stays, are required.

Job description

Join a growing geo-environmental team delivering technically robust ground investigation solutions across the UK.

Purpose & Scope of the Role

As a Geo-environmental Engineer based in Derby, you will support the design, procurement, supervision and delivery of geotechnical and geo-environmental investigations. Working across development, infrastructure, health, education and defence sectors, you will contribute to high-quality site characterisation, data collection and reporting, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high technical standard.

Your Impact in this position

You will play an important role in producing desk studies, managing site investigations and delivering clear, technically sound factual and interpretative reports. Your work will directly inform risk assessments, foundation design and environmental management strategies, enabling clients to progress projects with confidence.

Technical Delivery

You will undertake and support ground investigations, including logging, sampling and monitoring of groundwater and ground gas, ensuring all work is accurate and aligned with current standards and best practice.

Project Coordination

You will assist in planning, scoping and supervising site works, coordinating effectively with contractors and laboratories to maintain programme and quality.

Data & Reporting

You will produce clear, concise and technically robust reports, demonstrating strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

Health, Safety & Environment

You will apply sound health, safety and environmental practices in both site and office activities, contributing to a safe working culture.

You will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, communicating effectively with colleagues, clients and stakeholders.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

You will hold a degree in geology, engineering geology or environmental science, supported by practical experience in ground investigation and site-based work. You will be confident in report writing, IT systems and technical communication, with a solid understanding of health, safety and environmental practices. A full UK driving licence is required, along with a willingness to travel and work on site for a significant proportion of your time, including occasional overnight stays. Eligibility for Security Clearance is essential. Additional certifications such as CSCS, CAT and Genny, SSSTS or SMSTS, First Aid or Water Hygiene are advantageous.

This role is based in Derby with regular travel to sites across the UK. The position is predominantly site-focused, typically involving several days per week on site depending on project requirements. When not on site, hybrid working is supported, with flexibility in working patterns. Occasional overnight stays may be requis ed as part of project delivery.
