JOB DESCRIPTION
Wood is currently looking for a Functional Safety Engineer to join our Operations team. This is a hybrid role based out of the Aberdeen office.
The Functional Safety Engineer will be responsible for managing the entire functional safety lifecycle to ensure project compliance with client and Wood specifications, as well as applicable codes and international standards.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary contact for functional safety during project definition, development, and execution.
- Evaluate risks and support HAZOP / LOPA actions in line with process safety management standards.
- Develop and implement functional safety management plans, participate in LOPA studies, and lead safety assessments.
- Verify design calculations and develop validation & proof test procedures.
- Collaborate with other disciplines to develop deliverables such as P&IDs, cause & effect diagrams, alarm & trip schedules, equipment specifications, and SIS logic requirements, ensuring safety considerations are integrated.
- Ensure alignment with project and client safety standards, as well as international codes.
- Act as the main safety contact for clients, ensuring their requirements are met and satisfaction is maintained.
- Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and review SIS verification and validation according to standards.
- Monitor project performance metrics and assist in schedule development and resource tracking for safety activities.
- Possess an engineering degree in Automation or Electrical engineering, or equivalent, with relevant industrial experience.
- Preferably hold a Functional Safety Certification (e.g., CFSP/CFSE, TUV FSE, ISA84 SIS Expert).
- Have expertise with SIL verification tools such as exSILentia.
- Bring significant experience in EPC/MAC/plant operations, especially in process or automation & control systems within the oil & gas, hydrocarbon, refinery, offshore, or infrastructure sectors.
- Be capable of prioritizing tasks effectively across multiple projects.
- Experience with brownfield upgrades or replacements of automation and control systems.
- Stay updated on industry developments and understand project commercial aspects.
- Exhibit excellent communication skills, with enthusiasm and diplomacy.
- Provide technical guidance to engineering teams on equipment, instrumentation, and SIS configuration modifications.
Desirable Qualifications
- Chartered Engineer and member of an appropriate engineering institution.
- Knowledge of IEC 62443 and cybersecurity as related to functional safety.
Additional Qualifications
- Engineering Degree in Automation or Electrical engineering, or similar, with industrial experience.
- Functional Safety Certification (preferred).
- Experience with SIL verification tools like exSILentia.
- Significant experience in process or automation & control systems within relevant sectors.
