Job summary

Bailey Partnership seeks a Principal Fire Engineer to lead the development of our total fire concept. You will manage complex projects, develop fire strategies, and work with multidisciplinary teams to deliver compliant, life-safety focused designs.

You will guide the creation of fire strategy reports, calculations and fire risk assessments, while mentoring junior engineers and collaborating with clients and regulators.

Qualifications

  • Degree or Masters in Fire Engineering or related subject.
  • IFE/IFe membership is preferred.
  • Experience leading a team in a client-facing role.
  • Experience presenting to clients and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple, complex fire engineering projects from initial concept to completion.
  • Lead on fire risk assessments, hazard analyses and protective measures.
  • Design and specify active fire protection (sprinklers, alarms, smoke control) and passive protection ( compartmentation ).
  • Prepare fire strategy reports covering structural design to active systems and evacuation.
  • Use CAD/BIM tools (Revit, AutoCAD) for design documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Present complex fire strategies to clients, architects and regulators.
  • Perform high-level technical reviews and peer reviews of fire designs.

About the Role:

We are looking for a Principal Fire Engineer who wants to be more than just a technical lead. As we grow, we are diversifying our services ensuring we are at the forefront of fire engineering. You will be a vital part of this evolution, contributing your expertise to our strategy and helping us redefine what services we offer our clients.

What you'll be doing:

As a Principal Fire Engineer, you will oversee the entire 'total fire concept', ensuring that all components - from structural materials to evacuation plans - work as a unified, life-saving system. You will ensure buildings are designed to minimise fire risks, through contributing to the development of fire strategy reports, calculations and fire risk assessments. This role will require you to work closely with a range of professional in the construction industry, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage multiple, complex fire engineering projects from initial concept/bid to completion, ensuring delivery on time and within budget.
  • Lead on conducting formal fire risk assessments, hazard analyses, and determine the necessary protective measures to mitigate identified risks.
  • Design, calculate, and specify active fire protection systems (sprinklers, alarms, smoke control) and passive fire protection measures (compartmentation, fire-rated materials) using relevant codes and standards.
  • Prepare comprehensive fire strategy reports for buildings, outlining all fire safety measures, from structural design to active systems and human evacuation.
  • Strong mathematical and physics skills for hydraulic calculations, heat transfer analysis, and effective use of CAD and BIM software (Revit, AutoCAD) for design documentation.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Great written, oral and articulate communication skills, to present complex, performance-based fire strategies to clients, architects, regulatory authorities, negotiating design solutions.
  • Capability to conduct high-level technical reviews, quality assurance, and peer review of fire strategy reports and designs produced by other engineers.
About you:
  • Degree or Masters Degree Fire Engineering or relevant subject.
  • Professional Membership with IFE.
  • Previous experience leading a team.
  • Proven experience in client-facing roles or managing external client relationships.
