Principal Façade Engineer - London

We have a great opportunity for a dedicated Principal Façade Engineer to join our Building & Real Estate Division and wear the SOCOTEC badge with pride.

We are looking for a proactive, flexible and reliable Principal Façade Engineer to join our team. Ideally, you will have experience in a similar role and will possess a recognised engineering or architectural qualification.

Working across a variety of projects both autonomously and as part of a wider team, tasks you will be required to undertake as part of your role include (but are not limited to):

Provide continuous high quality façade engineering services to our customers, including but not limited to:

1. Developing façade designs and associated mark-ups for various buildings and infrastructure projects.
2. Providing advisory support and conducting site visits during the construction stage.
3. Conducting necessary factory visits.
4. Performing non-intrusive and intrusive investigations as required and preparing assessment reports of the façade and external wall systems.
5. Conducting third-party reviews and design verification.
6. Identify new work opportunities with clients and other professionals, actively engage with potential clients, and prepare/review fee proposal letters.
7. Manage projects from inception to completion, including responsibility for associated invoicing.
8. Work reliably, professionally, and effectively with others (internally and externally), manage time effectively (including regularly filling in timesheets), and operate within the limits of competency.
9. Collaborate within a team environment, supervise junior team members and support staff, and provide support to senior team members when required.
10. Provide support, supervision, training, mentoring, and guidance to staff within your remit of control.
11. Drive the technical development of the façade engineering team, working in cooperation with other senior team members.
12. Ensure SOCOTEC systems and policies are followed and assist with their development and continuous improvement (e.g., internal procedures, templates, or similar).
13. Maintain records to ensure the company’s Quality Procedures, service levels, and contractual requirements are met.
14. Maintain and manage strong client relationships and identify business development opportunities.
15. Manage external collaborators working on SOCOTEC projects.
16. Contribute to sustainable development and the evolution of the Building Envelope discipline.
17. Enhance the company’s reputation by attending or organizing conferences, panels, seminars, and CPD sessions.

1. A bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Civil/Mechanical/Structural engineering or similar field.
2. MSc in Façade Engineering from The University of Bath or The University of the West of England in Bristol or an equivalent qualification.
3. Chartership and full membership with the SFE (Society of Façade Engineering) or an equivalent professional membership.
4. 7+ years of experience in façade engineering and consultancy.
5. In-depth knowledge of building construction and façade systems, with the ability to assess façade defects.
6. Proficient in all mainstream façade materials, understanding their performance and degradation modes.
7. Familiar with British, European, and other international standards.
8. Experienced in façade testing and test procedures.
9. Mentoring and leadership skills.
10. Strong commercial acumen regarding fees and budgets.
11. Demonstrates a solid understanding of both short-term and long-term financial performance drivers.
12. Confident communicator with excellent customer service skills.
13. Self-motivated, capable of prioritizing and working independently, as well as following instructions and collaborating within a team.
14. Numerate, organized, and detail oriented.
15. Exhibits professional appearance and behaviour.
16. Flexible and adaptable to meet customer needs and changing priorities.
17. Reliable, punctual, honest, and trustworthy.
18. Experience in producing FRAEW reports in line with PAS 9980.
19. Familiar with relevant legislation and design guidance such as Approved Document B (ADB), BS 9999, BS 9991, BB100, HTM documents, and BS 7974 etc.
20. Familiar with relevant legislation and standards related to external wall systems such as PAS 9980, BS 8414, BR135, BS 8579, BS EN 13501-1 etc.

Desirable:

1. Excellent computer skills, particularly with regards to Microsoft Word / Outlook and Bluebeam.
