Job Description

Midlothian Council, as the fastest growing local authority in Scotland, has an opportunity for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to join our Public Health Environmental Protection Team. Applications will be considered for either a Principal Environmental Health Officer or an Environmental Health Officer.

The successful candidate will undertake an enforcement role in accordance with the appropriate Job Description and criteria outlined below.

This role allows for hybrid working, giving the successful applicant the opportunity to combine working from home and the office.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a stunning rural location less than 30 minutes journey by road or rail from the centre of Edinburgh, joining a friendly team of professionals to undertake a rewarding and diverse workload.

Positions

Environmental Health Officer – Grade 8 Salary £41,802.34

KNOWLEDGE

  1. A degree or equivalent in Environmental Health plus the postgraduate qualification of a Diploma from the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) or equivalent.
  2. Travel throughout the area is an essential part of your job, so a driving licence and use of a car are prerequisites, or the ability to demonstrate suitable travel arrangements.

Principal Environmental Health Officer – Grade 9 Salary £46,511.92

KNOWLEDGE

  1. A degree or equivalent in Environmental Health plus the postgraduate qualification of a Diploma from the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) or equivalent.
  2. Competency in assessment and enforcement across the statutory regimes relating to Public Health and Environmental Protection.
  3. Travel throughout the area is an essential part of your job, so a driving licence and use of a car are prerequisites, or the ability to demonstrate suitable travel arrangements.
  4. Chartered Member of the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland or equivalent (or working towards Chartered status).
  5. A further relevant qualification in an appropriate specialist or management field.

EXPERIENCE

  1. Detailed knowledge and extensive experience of working in the field of interest coupled with wide theoretical knowledge across Environmental Health functions.
  2. A comprehensive understanding of the practical application of statutory regulations with an understanding of forthcoming proposed initiatives/developments/legislation.
  3. Significant post-qualification experience in Environmental Health and a wider appreciation of the processes and procedures of local government in relation to relevant legislative matters.
  4. Experience of managing staff.

Please note that it is Midlothian Councils policy that successful applicants will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale.

Based on 36 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £46,511.92 per annum.

Responsibilities

Compliance with the mandatory Cabinet Office PSN (Public Sector Network) Code of Connection requires the Council to meet a baseline personal security standard.
