Job summary

Matchtech is seeking a Principal Engineer - Product Safety to support submarine engineering programmes in Barrow. This hybrid role requires delivering safety cases, hazard analysis and risk management for complex defence products and systems.

The contract spans 12 months with 2-3 days onsite per month in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. IR35 inside, standard hours with overtime potential.

Qualifications

• Significant experience in product safety engineering within a complex, regulated environment.
• Strong knowledge of hazard analysis, risk management and safety assessment methodologies.
• Experience producing safety cases, safety justifications and technical reports.
• Ability to interpret complex technical data and create robust, auditable safety arguments.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• STEM degree; chartership or working towards is beneficial.
• Knowledge of submarine lifecycle phases and environmental safety considerations are beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Provide support to engineering delivery leadership in the development, delivery and maintenance of the Product Safety Management System and Product Safety Case.
• Derive and manage product safety requirements.
• Develop, implement and maintain the Safety Management System.
• Produce and manage Project Safety Management Plans.
• Lead hazard identification, risk assessment and ongoing hazard/risk management activities.
• Oversee the administration and management of the Project Hazard Log.
• Influence the construction and delivery of the Safety Case, including safety case reports and supporting documentation.
• Provide product safety advice to engineering teams and wider stakeholders.

Our client, a leading organisation within the defence and security sector, is seeking a Principal Engineer - Product Safety to support submarine engineering programmes in Barrow. This contract role offers the opportunity to contribute to the assurance, safety and successful delivery of complex defence products and systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide support to engineering delivery leadership in the development, delivery and maintenance of the Product Safety Management System and Product Safety Case
• Derive and manage product safety requirements
• Develop, implement and maintain the Safety Management System
• Produce and manage Project Safety Management Plans
• Lead hazard identification, risk assessment and ongoing hazard/risk management activities
• Oversee the administration and management of the Project Hazard Log

• Support the development of training material and, where needed, deliver training to product safety and environmental domains

Job Requirements

• Significant experience in product safety engineering within a complex, regulated engineering environment (defence/high-integrity engineering preferred)
• Strong knowledge of hazard analysis, risk management and safety assessment methodologies
• Experience producing safety cases, safety justifications and technical reports
• Ability to interpret complex technical data and create robust, auditable safety arguments
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
• Proficient in MS Office (Word/Excel etc.)
• STEM degree (or equivalent); chartership or working towards is beneficial
• Beneficial: knowledge of submarine lifecycle phases (design, manufacturing, assembly, commissioning, test) and environmental challenges impacting safety
