The role
As a Principal Engineer - Nuclear Process, you’ll lead technical support for nuclear submarine maintenance activities at Western Europe’s largest Naval Base and a UK Nuclear Licensed Site.
You will support the development and operation of facilities for defueling decommissioned nuclear submarines and provide guidance on the safe transfer, storage, treatment, and disposal of radioactive liquid effluent from in-service submarines.
- Serve as a subject matter expert, advising the Head of Nuclear Engineering Group and stakeholders on design documentation
- Manage and develop a team of engineers with varying experience levels
- Lead work packages through design phases to maintain and enhance capabilities
- Oversee production, checking, and approval of technical documentation and drawings
- Conduct engineering analyses, including calculations, structural analysis, and fluid flow analysis
This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week with hybrid arrangements: 2 days onsite and 3 days remote.
Essential experience
- Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles for pressure/pipework systems
- Understanding of safe design, operation, and maintenance of nuclear/radiologically implicated systems
- Leadership experience in a design or technical support environment
- Proficiency with engineering software (e.g., CAD, stress analysis, fluid flow tools)
- Experience with pressure systems in regulated industries
- Knowledge of legislation, standards, and design codes compliance
- Experience managing work within the design lifecycle
Qualifications
- A degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
- Chartered Engineer membership or progress towards it
Security Clearance
Must be able to obtain and maintain SC security clearance.
