Job Title: Principal Engineer - MAE - HV Substation Plant

Job Location: Kentish Town

Murphy is recruiting for a Principal Engineer - MAE - HV Substation Plant to work with Murphy Applied Engineering on HV Substation plant designs. You can be based out of one of our regional offices, London, Cannock or Warrington.

Our engineering teams represent a multi-disciplined range of skills, adding value across sectors, and pushing boundaries in digital construction, engineering innovation, and design to deliver sustainable solutions.

Under Murphy Applied Engineering, our in-house teams include civil, structural, mechanical, geotechnical, and process engineers. They design both permanent and temporary works and are a trusted source of advice for colleagues and clients.

A day in the life of a Principal Engineer - HV Substation Plant
  1. Interpret client design specifications and lead the team in developing conceptual designs.
  2. Lead the creation of specifications and Bills of Quantities for equipment for bid processes.
  3. Assess supplier quotations and engage suppliers to ensure technical alignment.
  4. Identify and evaluate chargeable work, maintaining records of time spent.
  5. Ensure detailed design work complies with procedures and standards.
  6. Produce detailed designs, calculations, drawings, and diagrams according to standards.
  7. Perform design checks for team members and external designers.
  8. Provide guidance on design and operational issues.
  9. Consider design risks and prepare risk assessments.
  10. Manage and supervise team members and subcontractors to ensure quality and timeliness.
  11. Mentor junior engineers and support their development.
  12. Coordinate information flow for detailed design production.
  13. Undertake site visits and surveys.
  14. Assist in the development of graduate and junior engineers.
  15. Help all business units understand the scope of HV plant designs from tender to completion.
