Job Title: Principal Engineer - MAE - HV Substation Plant

Job Location: Kentish Town, United Kingdom

Murphy is recruiting for a Principal Engineer - MAE - HV Substation Plant to work with Murphy Applied Engineering on HV Substation plant designs. You can be based out of our regional offices in London, Cannock, or Warrington.

Our engineering teams encompass a multi-disciplinary range of skills, adding value across sectors, and pushing the boundaries of digital construction, engineering innovation, and design to deliver sustainable and economical solutions.

Under Murphy Applied Engineering, our in-house teams include civil, structural, mechanical, geotechnical, and process engineers. They design both permanent and temporary works for projects across locations and serve as a trusted source of advice for colleagues and clients.

A day in the life of a Principal Engineer - HV Substation Plant
  1. Interpret client design specifications and lead the team in developing conceptual designs.
  2. Lead the creation of specifications and Bills of Quantities for equipment to support bid processes.
  3. Assess supplier quotations and engage suppliers to align their proposals with project specifications.
  4. Identify chargeable work and maintain records of time spent.
  5. Ensure detailed design work complies with procedures and standards.
  6. Produce detailed designs, calculations, drawings, and sketches per standards and codes.
  7. Perform design checks for team members and external designers.
  8. Provide guidance on design and operational issues.
  9. Consider design risks and prepare risk assessments.
  10. Manage and supervise design team and subcontractors, ensuring quality and timeliness.
  11. Mentor junior engineers and support their development.
  12. Coordinate information flow for detailed design and construction readiness.
  13. Conduct site visits and surveys.
  14. Support the development of graduate and junior engineers.
  15. Assist business units and clients in understanding HV plant designs from tender to completion.
Additional responsibilities
  • Guide HV substation construction, answer technical queries.
  • Develop conceptual designs aligned with safety and legislation.
  • Support bid teams with technical input and innovative solutions.
  • Promote health, safety, and environmental best practices.
  • Manage interface with external design teams and control change processes.
  • Maintain relationships with technical consultants and suppliers.
  • Manage documentation via Doc Control.
  • Experience in high voltage transmission and distribution projects.
  • Possession of National Grid TP141 High Voltage Plant (CDAE) authorization.
