GE Vernova is seeking a Principal Engineer in the UK to lead high-impact valve design initiatives. You will guide cross-functional teams, ensure safety and compliance, and act as the technical authority on complex decisions. The role emphasizes deep theory, robust documentation, and mentorship of junior engineers.

You will interface with stakeholders, review DFMEA and design reviews, and help shape industry standards while delivering critical electrical engineering solutions.

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science with HV focus.
  • Deep understanding of LCC and VSC, converter topologies, switching schemes and control strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Work with various teams to ensure robust, reliable, cost-effective Valve design.
  • Ensure highest safety levels during testing/installation and document application.
  • Take approver role for design reviews, DFMEA and act as technical authority.
  • Write and review technical documentation, specifications and reports.
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly to stakeholders.
  • Support testing by reviewing ITPs and test circuits and oversee testing.
  • Reflect IEC/IEEE/CIGRÉ HVDC standards in documentation and participate in industry forums.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers to develop team competency.

As recognized experts in specialized fields, they normally lead or support projects and initiatives with broad scope and high impact to the business. They are responsible for major and complex assignments with long-term business implications. This role contributes to the overall strategy and manages complex issues within functional area of expertise.

Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Work with various teams in the business to ensure we have the most robust, reliable, efficient, safe and cost-effective Valve design available to the market. Support the Valve Engineering team to achieve this.
  • Ensure the highest levels of safety can be achieved during any testing or installation works and the application of this is within our documentation.
  • Take an approver role for design reviews, risk assessments, Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and act as a technical authority for critical decisions.
  • Write and review technical documentation, specifications and reports.
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders, leadership and customers.
  • Support the testing process in reviewing Inspection & Test Plans (ITP), test circuit design and set up and physical presence during testing.
  • Reflect the relevant international standards within our documentation ensuring at all times GE remains compliant to the requirements. Be pro-active in industry forums to develop the standards of the future.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers. Proactively develop the competency of the team
Required Qualifications
  • Educated to degree level in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science. Preferably also with higher education and a focus on Power Electronics, HV Engineering or Power Systems.
  • Deep understanding of Line Commutated Converters (LCC) and Voltage Source Converters (VSC). Awareness of converter topologies, switching schemes, and control strategies
Required Characteristics:
  • Able to interface effectively with most levels of the organization
  • Conceptual or theoretical activities related to the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. Includes the analysis of static (structural) and dynamic behaviour of mechanical systems
  • Competent in CREO / CAD software or similar. Able to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation.
  • Knowledge of relevant IEC, IEEE, or CIGRÉ standards for HVDC systems
  • Knowledge of document control methodologies and systems.
  • EHS compliance ability - good strong knowledge of safety and the environment.
