Job Description

Are you ready to take the next step in your career? Do you want to do meaningful work that improves quality of life? At Tetra Tech, you will work with high-performing teams who are passionate about using their expertise to find solutions to complex problems in water, environment, infrastructure, resource management, energy, and international development.

Tetra Tech is one of the largest and fastest growing environmental consultancies in the world. In 2023, the Engineering News-Record (ENR) ranked Tetra Tech #1 in Water for the 20th consecutive year.

We currently have multiple openings within our flood risk team due to ongoing growth with our existing and new clients. We are seeking a Principal Engineer to support our Water Engineering team across the UK, ideally based in Manchester, Leeds, Chorley, Cockermouth, or London. Other locations will be considered for the right candidate. Our team undertakes a wide variety of major infrastructure projects for both private and public sectors, focusing on integrated flood risk and drainage solutions with state-of-the-art design.

Our flood risk portfolio includes projects across the water sector, from flood alleviation schemes for local authorities, MOD, and private clients, to surface water separation schemes for water utilities. We work with high-profile housing developers from site inception through to masterplanning, design, and construction, including natural flood risk management and Sustainable Urban Drainage solutions.

As a project leader, you will guide teams and support clients in project delivery, bidding, and proposition activities, contributing to our growth. You will be responsible for leading projects involving river, coastal, and flood defence appraisal and design, hydraulic modelling, hydrology assessments, surface water management, and developing business cases. Projects range from £10k to £100m, covering flood risk for defense, transport, local government, utilities, infrastructure, commercial, industrial, and residential developments.

You will independently manage technical aspects from project inception to completion, lead low to medium risk projects, and mentor junior staff. You will work closely with clients to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget, supported by our senior technical leadership. We offer internal project management training, mentoring, CPD, and a flexible hybrid working policy, with some travel and outside normal hours expected.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • An enthusiastic professional who thrives on challenges
  • A desire to work in a growing team and progress their career
  • Experience in delivering and leading flood risk and surface water separation projects, including solution development, optioneering, and design
  • Ability to write reports, including business cases, and present to partners
  • Experience leading meetings and design discussions with clients
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, such as hydraulic modellers, engineers, and environmental consultants
  • Interest or experience in Natural Flood Management solutions
  • Knowledge of flood risk economic appraisal methods, including the Multi-coloured Manual
  • Understanding of the NPPF
  • Proficiency with IT systems like ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Civils 3D, and MS Office
  • Degree in a relevant field, Chartered status with ICE or CIWEM, or nearing chartership
  • Interest in business development and bidding
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, and a track record of delivering work on time
  • Commitment to health and safety practices
  • Team player qualities, enthusiasm, flexibility, and versatility
  • Ability to mentor and support junior team members
  • Full UK Driving License
  • Security clearance to SC level or willingness to apply
