I am working with a well-established, multi-disciplinary consultancy firm that is looking for a dynamic and highly motivated Principal Engineer to join their growing Rail Infrastructure Engineering team. This is an opportunity to take on a key leadership role within a vibrant and expanding team working on a diverse range of projects in the Rail, Maritime, and Asset Management sectors.

This role will give you the opportunity to work on a varied portfolio of projects and structures such as Station Development, AFA Schemes, Bridge Design and Renewal Schemes. The role requires a combination of strong technical expertise, leadership, and stakeholder management skills. The key responsibilities for this Principal Engineer role are:

  • Take on responsibility as technical lead and relating to project management as and when required.
  • Lead and manage project teams, providing technical support and guidance.
  • Mentor and gain an understanding of the technical knowledge of colleagues.
  • Oversee a project scope of works, budget, programme ensuring that they are delivered to the highest standards.
  • Prepare fee proposals, contributing to the tender process and agree on a project scope with clients. You will be taking the lead or supporting in all aspects of tenders which includes producing and delivering presentations.
  • Manage key client relationships, ensuring high levels of client satisfaction and continuous business development.
  • Be responsible for the financial, technical and project management on various rail projects.
  • Supervise and approve technical reports, specifications, drawings, calculations, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Observe that designs comply with relevant design standards and health & safety regulations, ensuring that all deliverables are compliant.
  • Conduct and lead inspections and site visits, liaising with clients and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and ensure that the production of specification and drawings are done to the highest standards.
  • Oversee the quality assurance of all technical outputs, ensuring that they meet both internal and client standards and specifications.
  • Actively engage in identifying new business opportunities, developing proposals, and participating in client meetings to promote the firm's capabilities.

Experience/skills required for this Principal Engineer role are:

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in civil/structural engineering, ideally within the Rail sector and on infrastructure projects.
  • Chartered or Incorporated status (ICE or IStructE).
  • Experience as a CRE(D) is essential.
  • Proven track record in leading projects and teams with strong financial management skills.
  • Extensive design experience in the Rail sector and other infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of Eurocodes, Network Rail standards, British Standards and relevant engineering assurance processes.
  • Strong knowledge of Network Rail Engineering assurance processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis software (e.g., Tekla Tedds, Tekla Structural Designer, MIDAS), S-frame 3D, Robot, SuperStress, MIDAS, LUSas etc.
  • Strong commercial awareness, including budgeting and contract management.
  • Effective communication skills with a client-facing role.
  • Proficiency in using MS Office based software is essential.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary design coordination and integration.
  • A good understanding of commercial awareness (profit & loss, budgeting, contract management) is desirable but not essential.
  • Proven experience of delivering projects to time and budget.
  • A good working knowledge of CDM regulations.
