Principal Electrical Design Engineer

? Leeds, Newcastle, or Westhill | Full-time | 37.5 hrs/week

? Contract Position | Senior Grade

A leading engineering and infrastructure consultancy is seeking an experienced Principal Primary Design Engineer to join their Power Transmission & Distribution division. This role offers the opportunity to lead major HV substation projects (up to 400kV), manage design teams, and influence the technical direction of high-impact energy infrastructure across the UK.

? The Role:

The successful candidate will:

• Lead the delivery of HV Primary Engineering designs for substation projects.
• Approve key design deliverables including SLDs, layouts, earthing designs, and SC force calculations.
• Ensure designs meet all client specifications, industry standards, and safety legislation (including CDM regulations).
• Provide technical oversight and mentorship to engineers and technicians.
• Collaborate with project managers, civil, protection, and cabling teams to ensure seamless design integration.
• Contribute to project planning, resource allocation, and procurement support.

? Candidate Profile:

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership.
• Minimum of 10 years’ experience in HV substation primary plant design.
• Proficient in AIS/GIS substation layouts up to 400kV.
• Knowledge of CDM regulations and ideally CDAE or TP141 qualified.
• Strong leadership skills with experience managing and developing design teams.
• Familiarity with BIM tools (e.g., BIM 360) is an advantage.
