Job summary

A leading engineering firm is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer for an initial 6-month contract. This role involves managing teams and providing expertise in power systems, ensuring compliance and quality targets are met. The engineer will also develop design solutions and manage documentation while working closely with various stakeholders.

Job description

Principal Electrical Engineer - Power

Initial 6 Month Contract - 2 days per fortnight on site

£79.17 per hour (Inside IR35)

Responsibilities:
  • Support development and analysis of platform power systems, providing support to the Engineering Manager and external specialists.
  • Lead the team, managing daily activities and deliverables.
  • Develop and maintain team competencies, manage project plans, and resolve issues.
Typical duties include:
  • Develop design solutions meeting time, cost, and quality targets.
  • Manage requirements and acceptance criteria across systems or programs.
  • Support design, build, integration, installation, and commissioning activities, ensuring compliance with contractual and performance requirements.
  • Produce documentation for design reviews, including diagrams, specifications, calculations, and justifications.
  • Ensure design evidence is comprehensive, documented, and endorsed.
  • Conduct design reviews and present to customers.
  • Provide technical support for performance and acceptance activities, including supplier documentation review.
  • Support scope and resource estimation for bids and project planning.
  • Support Certificate of Design activities and present complex technical arguments clearly.
  • Contribute to build activities, defect resolution, and change management.
Knowledge:
  • Technical report writing skills.
  • Experience with the engineering lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of defence standards is advantageous.
  • Understanding of power system modelling, generators, switchgear, protection, or power electronics.
  • Deep understanding of power systems modelling, generation, distribution, protection, operation, or earth fault monitoring.
  • Experience working within relevant engineering standards and possibly supporting submarines or subsystems.
  • Experience with complex design programs and electrical power systems.
Skills:
  • Technical reports and specifications.
  • Functional system diagrams and safety justifications.
  • Technical presentations, system calculations, modelling, and analysis.
  • Attending factory acceptance tests and equipment configuration/testing.

Additional requirements:

Excellent team skills, self-motivated, quick learner, capable of prioritizing and managing work independently.
