Job summary

Ofcom in the United Kingdom is seeking a Principal Economist to lead teams of economists, econometricians and data analysts on high‑impact regulatory projects across telecoms, broadcasting and online safety. You will shape policy analysis, develop empirical methods and steer complex evaluations.

You will ensure robust analysis and communicate insights to stakeholders, mentoring colleagues and driving impact on UK consumers and markets through rigorous economic evaluations and policy design.

Qualifications

• Solid foundation in applied microeconomics and econometrics
• Experience applying economic concepts across consultancy, regulator or consumer authority
• Interest in applying machine learning/AI to economic analysis and regulatory questions
• Experience with at least one analytical software package (R or Python)
• Postgraduate qualification in economics; PhD preferred but not essential

Responsibilities

• Lead teams of economists, econometricians and data analysts integral to Ofcom projects
• Identify and analyse economic and policy issues using empirical techniques
• Provide high-quality economic and quantitative analysis and strategic direction for projects
• Communicate economic issues effectively to stakeholders in meetings
• Support teams to produce well-reasoned drafts for publication
• Contribute to development of colleagues through training initiatives
• Be integral to leadership and development of the Economics and Analytics Group together with Principals and Directors
