Job summary

Tyler Grange Birmingham seeks a Principal Ecologist to lead our Ecology team and drive complex projects from strategy through delivery. You will provide strategic guidance, mentor staff and collaborate across disciplines to grow the consulting offering.

As Project Director, you will oversee large schemes, manage client relationships, ensure high-quality reports, and contribute to business development within a collaborative, award-winning environment.

Qualifications

  • Full membership of CIEEM.
  • Strong understanding of UK ecological legislation, planning policy and best practice.
  • Experience leading ecological projects and teams.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, timelines and client relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Acting as Project Director on large or complex projects with accountability for delivery.
  • Leading ecological project teams across a diverse portfolio.
  • Project management and client liaison on high-value schemes.
  • Mentoring and developing ecologists across levels.
  • Business development and securing new opportunities for the Ecology team.

An exciting opportunity to further strengthen and lead our ecological presence within our Ecology team. We are looking for a motivated and experienced Principal Ecologist to join our team, working closely with our other disciplines including our Landscape & Arboricultural teams.

The Role

The successful candidate will play a key leadership role in delivering complex ecological projects, providing strategic technical guidance and driving business development initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the direction of our Ecology offering while progressing your career within a supportive and people-focused consultancy.

You Will Be Involved With
  • Acting as Project Director on large or complex projects, with accountability for delivery, quality and client satisfaction
  • Leading and overseeing ecological project teams across a diverse portfolio
  • Project management and client liaison on high-value and complex schemes
  • Preliminary Ecological Appraisals
  • Ecological Impact Assessments
  • Habitats Regulations Assessments
  • Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments
  • Protected Species Surveys, Licensing and Mitigation Strategies
  • Reviewing, quality assuring and signing off technical reports and deliverables
  • Mentoring and developing ecologists across all levels of the team
  • Business development, client relationship management and securing new opportunities for the Ecology team
Essential
What We're Looking For
  • A degree (or higher) in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biological Sciences or a related discipline
  • Full membership of CIEEM
  • Strong understanding of UK ecological legislation, planning policy and industry best practice
  • Extensive experience undertaking and overseeing UK Habitat Classification and protected species surveys
  • Significant experience liaising with clients, local planning authorities, statutory consultees and project stakeholders
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to advise and influence at a senior level
  • Strong report writing, reviewing and quality assurance skills
  • Excellent project management skills and experience delivering complex projects on time and within budget
  • Experience leading, mentoring and developing ecologists across multiple grades
  • A proven track record of business development and securing work
  • An approach that aligns with our values and collaborative ways of working
  • A full UK driving licence
Desirable
  • Chartered Ecologist status or progression towards Chartership
  • One or more Protected Species Licences
  • Experience acting as Project Director on large, multidisciplinary projects
  • Experience managing key client accounts and frameworks
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary consultancy environment
Salary: £48,450 - £52,040

Location:

Birmingham. We operate a hybrid working model with an expectation of 2 days a week in the office. This can include site-based work.
