Principal Ecologist
Location: Perth or Glasgow, Scotland (Hybrid Working)
Reporting to: Ecology Business Manager
Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 DOE

The Role


We're looking for a Principal Ecologist to lead the delivery of high-quality ecological projects and help shape the future of our Ecology team.


You'll:



  • Lead and manage ecological projects across the UK

  • Collaborate with in-house disciplines like Construction, Aquatics, and Hydrology

  • Develop strong client relationships and contribute to business growth

  • Mentor and support junior team members

  • Help shape internal processes and strategic direction

Key Responsibilities



  • Lead on:


    • Ecological Impact Assessments (EIA)

    • Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA)

    • Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments

    • Protected Species Surveys and Licensing

    • Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and mitigation strategies


  • Write fee proposals and manage bids

  • Coordinate with clients, in-house teams, and sub-contractors

  • Review reports and ensure project quality

  • Contribute to team development and operational improvements

  • Maintain professional standards aligned with CIEEM/IEMA/CIWEM codes

What We're Looking For


Essential:



  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or related subject

  • CIEEM membership (working toward Chartership)

  • Holder of at least one protected species licence

  • Strong knowledge of UK legislation and planning policy

  • Excellent report writing and quality assurance skills

  • Confident project and team leadership

  • Experience with fee proposals and commercial work

  • Strong communication and organisational skills

  • Full UK driving licence


Desirable:



  • Experience using project management tools (e.g., WorkflowMax)

  • CSCS or EMSS card

  • LANTRA 4x4 training

  • Emergency Outdoor First Aid certification
