Planning Recruitment Limited is assisting a London-based client to recruit an experienced Principal Designer to lead the Building Regulations and CDM Principal Designer services. You will work closely with a partner, with the aim of progressively taking over leadership of the service.

The role focuses on delivering Principal Designer commissions across complex projects, while also mentoring a team and contributing to process improvements and business development.

Qualifications

• Experience delivering Building Regulations Principal Designer services and CDM duties.
• Relevant degree in architecture, architectural technology, building surveying, or related field.
• Strong knowledge of Building Regulations, Building Safety Act, and CDM Regulations.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and client-facing with commercial focus.

Principal Designer – Building Regulations & CDM

Location: Camden, London
Salary: £68,000–£75,000 DOE
Type: Permanent

The Opportunity

My client is looking for an experienced Principal Designer to join their London team and take a leading role within their established Principal Designer service.

This is a succession opportunity, working closely with the Partner currently responsible for the service with the intention of progressively taking over its day-to-day leadership and developing into Head of Principal Designer Services.

Around 90% of the position will focus on delivering, managing and developing Principal Designer services, with the remaining 10% focused on providing technical guidance and mentoring internally.

The Role

You will lead Principal Designer commissions under both the Building Regulations and CDM Regulations, working across complex projects and coordinating with clients, design teams, contractors and consultants.

Responsibilities will include:

• Leading Building Regulations and CDM Principal Designer commissions.

• Reviewing and challenging technical information, compliance and design risks.

• Supporting Higher-Risk Building projects, including Gateway processes, change control and golden thread requirements.

• Managing and mentoring the Principal Designer team.

• Developing procedures, templates and quality assurance processes.

• Building strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.

• Preparing fee proposals, scopes and bids.

• Monitoring resources, fees and commercial performance.

• Supporting business development and the continued growth of the service.

About You

• You will already have strong experience delivering Building Regulations Principal Designer services, alongside practical knowledge of CDM Principal Designer duties.

  You should have:

• A relevant architecture, architectural technology, building surveying, building control or related qualification.

• Strong knowledge of the Building Regulations, Building Safety Act and CDM Regulations.

• Significant technical design and construction-stage experience.

• Experience leading Principal Designer commissions and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.

• Strong client-facing and commercial skills.

• Experience managing or mentoring colleagues.

• The ambition and capability to progress into leadership of the service.

Experience with Higher-Risk Buildings, Gateway submissions, Design & Build procurement and BIM/digital information management would be particularly advantageous.
