Job summary

Mane Contract Services is seeking a Principal Substation Secondary (P&C) Design Engineer in Birmingham for a 12-month contract. You will lead FEED and detailed design for high-voltage substation projects, providing technical direction and ensuring design integrity across interfaces with Civil, Structural, and Primary teams.

The role requires Chartered Engineer status or active path to chartership, a strong UK or international P&C background, BPSS clearance and the ability to travel to sites as

Qualifications

• Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or actively on path to chartership.
• Strong background in P&C substation design within UK or international transmission/distribution.
• Solid understanding of UK and international electrical codes (IEC, IEEE).
• BPSS clearance eligible to hold or obtain BPSS clearance.

Responsibilities

• Technical Leadership: Lead P&C FEED and detailed design packages for major transmission-scale substation projects.
• Team & Line Management: Line manage, mentor, and upskill engineers while supporting resource planning.
• Design & QA: Oversee, review, and assure all secondary plant/P&C design outputs and technical packages.
• Bids & Tenders: Act as Tender Manager for HV plant packages—preparing competitive technical offers, cost estimates, and resource plans.
• Stakeholder & Project Coordination: Chair hazard and design review meetings; coordinate across Civil, Structural, and Primary disciplines; participate in site visits, FAT, and SAT.

About the Role:

Are you a senior Electrical Engineering professional ready to shape technical excellence on major high-voltage (HV) electricity transmission projects?

We are seeking a Principal Substation Secondary (P&C) Design Engineer to lead front-end engineering design (FEED) and detailed design workstreams.

In this role, you will balance high-level technical leadership with team mentorship, quality assurance, and client-facing stakeholder management across complex UK infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities:

• Technical Leadership: Lead P&C FEED and detailed design packages for major transmission-scale substation projects.
• Team & Line Management: Line manage, mentor, and upskill junior and mid-level engineers while supporting resource planning and workforce growth.
• Design & QA: Oversee, review, and assure all secondary plant/P&C design outputs, bid submissions, and technical packages for full compliance and integrity.
• Bids & Tenders: Act as Tender Manager for HV plant packages—preparing competitive technical offers, cost estimates, and resource plans.
• Stakeholder & Project Coordination: Chair hazard and design review meetings; coordinate across Civil, Structural, and Primary disciplines; and participate in site visits, FAT, and SAT as required.

What We’re Looking For:

• Education: Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
• Professional Status: Chartered Engineer (CEng through the IET) or actively on the path to chartership.
• Technical Expertise: Strong background in P&C substation design within the UK or international transmission/distribution sector.
• Standards Knowledge: Solid understanding of UK and international electrical codes (IEC, IEEE).
• Clearance: Must hold or be eligible to undergo BPSS Clearance.
• Soft Skills: Outstanding communication, team leadership, and the flexibility to engage with clients and travel to site when needed.
