Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a PRINCIPAL CS&A ARCHITECT to be based at our client's premises in Warrington, Cheshire.

About the Project:

The Box Encapsulation Plant (BEP) is being constructed on the Sellafield Limited (SL) site in Cumbria. It is part of the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo (MSSS) Program, addressing the cleanup of a hazardous legacy facility. The BEP will treat, immobilize, and prepare nuclear waste for long-term storage, and may also process waste from other decommissioning projects at SL.

About the Role:

The ideal candidate has a minimum of 10 years of nuclear experience, with expertise in regulated, quality-assured systems (preferably nuclear). The role involves pragmatic design judgment and significant engineering responsibilities.

Project Specific Requirements:
  1. Report daily to SL CSA RE.
  2. Provide leadership and guidance to JV CSA design and site engineering teams.
  3. Attend the Warrington office at least 3 days a week and the Sellafield site regularly to engage with multidisciplinary teams.
  4. Review and comment on CSA JV design submissions, site modifications, and related documents.
  5. Review architectural detail design drawings, calculations, and documents for 'As Built' status.
  6. Work knowledge of fire strategy arrangements and fire-rated solutions.
  7. Interface with multidisciplinary design teams and liaise with SL capabilities to address site issues.
  8. Support Safety Case work including DJRs and fire strategy reviews.
  9. Participate in model reviews, external interface management, and oversee building security boundaries.
  10. Support external works, including reviews of external interface points and site engagement.
  11. Conduct site visits bi-weekly to oversee construction progress and resolve issues.
  12. Inspect and record progress of CS&A scope, including fire stopping, finishes, and furniture installation.
  13. Support safety, planning, and plant handover activities.
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
  • Architectural Degree or equivalent.
  • Chartered Architect (RIBA 3).
  • Proven expertise in major projects, with successful application of specialist knowledge.
  • Leadership ability within an architectural function.
  • Experience in nuclear sector projects, including new build and decommissioning.
  • Knowledge of British Standards, Building Regulations, and Planning Legislation relevant to Nuclear Licensed Sites.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Full UK driving license and ability to meet UK security clearance requirements.
