Job description

Job title: Principal Control & Instrumentation Engineer

Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Filton or Manchester (minimum 2 days on site per fortnight). We offer flexible working arrangements; please discuss options with your recruiter.

Salary: Negotiable depending on experience

What you'll be doing:
  1. Develop a functional design for the Vehicle Control solution for SSNA.
  2. Collaborate with stakeholders to oversee the delivery of the vehicle control solution and strategy.
  3. Support assurance activities in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Engineer.
  4. Work with the engineering manager to deliver the vehicle control system, reporting progress via agile tools.
  5. Ensure the engineering delivery plan is met and delivered on schedule.
  6. Guide and instruct on engineering methods/processes to support plan delivery.
  7. Develop technical solutions with the Engineering Delivery Team, mentoring team members.
  8. Engage with legacy stakeholders to develop solutions from baseline designs.
Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • Experience in developing C&I designs for large-scale systems meeting various standards.
  • Experience managing non-functional requirements like EMC and shock compliance.
  • Proficiency in authoring/reviewing design documents such as I/O schedules, specifications, interface control documents.
  • Degree or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, Maths, or Science.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of control system architecture and communication protocols (e.g., RS-485, PROFIBUS).
  • Experience with IEC 61508 or similar safety standards and supporting evidence production.
  • Experience with manoeuvring systems across industries.

The Platform Complex Systems team:

Contribute to defining and designing the Royal Navy's next-generation attack submarines, working with legacy and new control systems, collaborating with internal teams, suppliers, and the Royal Navy. Relocation support is available for eligible roles.
