Working arrangements:

Hybrid - expected onsite 2 days per fortnight. Location flexible - Barrow, Filton, Frimley or Brough.

The Principal Engineer (C) - Electrical Engineering (C&I) shall provide support to the Engineering Manager and/or external specialists during development, analysis, integration, and verification of platform control and instrumentation systems.

JOB FUNCTION:

  • Develop design solutions to meet time, cost, and quality milestones.
  • Develop and manage requirements and acceptance criteria for systems or products.
  • Understand contractual and performance requirements, supporting their definition and acceptance criteria through all project phases.
  • Produce documentation for design reviews, including diagrams, specifications, calculations, and justifications.
  • Ensure design evidence is comprehensive, recorded, and endorsed appropriately.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual, safety, environmental, and company standards.
  • Conduct design reviews and present findings to customers.
  • Develop functional designs for C&I solutions for complex systems, deriving from P&ID diagrams.
  • Produce Bills of Materials for C&I equipment.
  • Specify instrumentation for various parameters, ensuring suitability for specific conditions.
  • Create C&I designs meeting functional, safety, and defense standards.
  • Assess and ensure compliance against non-functional requirements like EMC and shock resistance.
  • Provide verification evidence demonstrating design compliance.
  • Produce various design documents such as I/O schedules, instrument schedules, cable schedules, and specifications.
  • Implement physical system-to-system interface designs.
  • Lead technical design reviews for C&I systems.

Subject Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • BEng (Hons) / MEng or equivalent.
  • CEng or eligible for CEng.
  • Technical report writing skills.
  • Experience across the engineering lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of defense standards is advantageous but not essential.

In-depth understanding of at least one of the following areas:

  • Instrumentation and control system theory including PID control.
  • Electrical circuit design, EMC precautions, and power supply characteristics.
  • Safety Integrity Levels and BS EN 61508 or 61511.
  • PLC programming to IEC 61131-3 standard and fieldbus technology (Profibus/Profinet).
