Job Description

The Role:

We’re looking for an experienced and driven Principal Consultant to join our Sustainable Places team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about placemaking, with a strong background in sustainable development planning and transport strategy—ideally gained through working on large-scale developments that enable more sustainable mobility and place-based outcomes. In this role, you’ll provide technical leadership and project management support across a diverse portfolio of projects, delivering high-quality transport and development planning advice to both private and public sector clients.

What Drives Us:

We’re looking for someone who shares our enthusiasm for:

· Designing and delivering active and sustainable places where walking, cycling, and public transport are prioritised.

· Applying vision-led transport planning and placemaking principles, grounded in a solid understanding of development and built environment transport planning.

· Using transport modelling in a proportionate and pragmatic way - balancing future travel forecasts with real-world user needs.

· Providing expert input into planning applications, underpinned by a deep knowledge of planning legislation and sustainable development practices.

· Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams - Architects, Planners, Urban Designers, Landscape Architects, and Environmental Specialists - to shape and secure planning consents for places people are proud to call home.

What We’re Looking For:

The ideal candidate will:

· Have a strong consultancy background, with a proven track record of delivering transport planning advice for planning applications and building trusted relationships with clients and project teams.

· Demonstrate experience managing and delivering successful projects across sectors such as Care, Education, Health, Leisure, Warehousing/Distribution, Residential and mixed-use.

· Possess robust technical skills in development-related transport planning, including site and junction assessments, engineering design input and co-design, accessibility and connectivity analysis, development of access and movement strategies, preparation of Transport Statements/Assessments and Travel Plans, Section 106 advice, Construction Transport Management Plans and oversight of post-consent activities.

· Be well-versed in relevant transport design guidance (e.g. DMRB, Manual for Streets, and active travel design standards).

· Be capable of maintaining and growing client relationships, identifying new business opportunities, and contributing to commercial success.

· Have a growing network of industry contacts and positive client referrals.

· Communicate clearly and effectively, both in writing and verbally, using a range of formats to convey complex ideas.

· Hold a relevant professional qualification such as Chartered Engineer or TPP (or equivalent).

· Contribute to the advancement of their profession and the broader industry by:

Participating in relevant professional associations, working groups, or industry forums.

- Sharing expertise through speaking engagements, publications, or thought leadership.

- Staying abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices.

- Supporting the development of industry standards or contributing to policy discussions.

- Mentoring peers or early-career professionals.
