Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Clinical Scientist at Band 8A in Biochemistry within the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group. Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an aspiring leader to take their career to the next level. Applications are invited for an experienced, suitably qualified HCPC registered Principal Clinical Scientist with Part 1 FRCPath and at least 2 years’ experience post HCPC registration.

The successful candidate will be a Principal Clinical Scientist at Band 8A in Biochemistry, ideally with experience in developing assays utilizing liquid chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry and HPLC.

You will work across the LCL multi-laboratory sites, deputising for the Consultant Clinical Scientist when required. You will need to work autonomously and drive innovative method development and quality improvement projects in clinical biochemistry and clinical effectiveness. A proven track record of driving quality and providing a robust clinical service both in and out of hours is essential.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical advice and interpretative services to Biochemistry across LCL sites, both in and out of hours, with clinical leadership through Clinical Scientists.
  • Support multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) and promote the role of Clinical Scientists in clinics such as Lipids, Adrenal, and Bone.
  • Develop innovative methods and clinical pathways with scientific skills and knowledge, troubleshooting complex assays.
  • Support all areas of biochemistry to ensure an effective, evidence-based clinical service, assisting Consultant Clinical Scientists.
  • Contribute to academic teaching at MSc level in Clinical Biochemistry, undergraduate medicine, and training of BMS to the Specialist Portfolio. Conduct weekly educational meetings for technical and clinical staff across LCL.
  • Support the wider Cheshire & Merseyside Pathology Network in driving harmonized pathways and supporting the design and rollout of the new Cheshire & Merseyside LIMS.
Key Functions
  • Development of new assays utilizing liquid chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry and HPLC for clinical and research applications.
  • Provide clinical liaison across biochemistry, with a focus on adrenal biochemistry and therapeutic drug monitoring.
  • Contribute to H&S committees and documentation.
  • Drive clinical effectiveness within LCL, including clinical audits, guideline reviews, and initiatives like GIRFT and PQAD.
  • Review DATIX reports, attend safety meetings, and manage risks to ensure quality and safety.
