Job description

Weare delighted to advertise a full time Principal Clinical Psychologist post(or part-time applications also welcomed) working with the Stem CellTransplant and Cellular Therapies service, funded by the charity AnthonyNolan. The service carries out approximately 60 allogeneic stem celltransplants per year. The Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) servicestarted in 2021 and has already seen significant growth. This post-holderwill continue to develop the pre-transplant, peri-transplant and post-transplantpsychological pathways and service. The post-holder will link with otherAnthony Nolan posts nationally for support and advice. Anthony Nolan providean excellent package of benefits for this post, including a generous CPDbudget.

AnthonyNolan have provided funding for a further 10-12 months, dependant on WTE (theprevious two post-holders relocated after two years in post). We hope togather evidence for the Trust to take this on as a permanent post after thecharity funding ends.

Main duties of the job

Thepost-holder will work as an integrated member of the stem cell transplant andcellular therapy teams to facilitate psychologically informed patient care(through routine input into MDT meetings, consultation, supervision, andtraining). The work will involve direct patient work in an in-patientsetting, out-patient setting and some remote consultations. There isopportunity for some home working.

Thereis an expectation to collect data to provide to Anthony Nolan. The postholder will produce an annual report and develop a business plan todemonstrate the benefit of the role to the Trust and apply for futurefunding. The post holder will be expected to collaborate with Anthony Nolanon promotional activities, podcasts and developing patient information. Therewill be line management and supervision responsibilities for other ClinicalPsychologists within the department. The post holder will also take part inOperational Management meetings and work.

About us

Thepost sits within the LTHT Cancer Psychology Service and Haematology team, butwill also have strong links with the wider Clinical & Health PsychologyDepartment. The Department has flourished and has over 50 cliniciansorganised into three sectors (Medicine, Neuropsychology and Surgery &Rehabilitation). We have several special interest groups for psychologistswanting to develop therapeutic skills in areas such as Acceptance andCommitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy and Cognitive Analytic Therapy,as well as a focus on regular supervision.

Thereare very close links with the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training Programmeat the School of Medicine, Leeds University. There is an expectation to offerregular training placements to trainee clinical psychologists.

Job responsibilities

Toprovide a qualified specialist clinical or counselling psychology service topatients who are seen within the designated clinical speciality/area, acrossall sites and sectors of care by:

a) Providing specialist psychologicalassessments and therapy

b) Offering advice and consultation onpatients psychological and neuropsychological care to non-psychologistcolleagues and to other non-professional carers

c) Developing, supporting andmaintaining effective working relationships with other disciplines within theservice areas, including attending Team meetings

d) Using research skills for audit,policy and service development and leading on research projects within thearea served by the team/service

e) Proposing and implementing policychanges within the specialist area served

f) Line managing Early Career andSenior Clinical or Counselling Psychologists in the discrete clinicalspeciality that the post covers and making a contribution to the generalmanagement, governance and supervision of the clinical/counselling psychologyservice as agreed

g) Working autonomously in the deliveryof these duties within professional guidelines, the evidence-based literatureand the overall framework of the Team, Department of Clinical & HealthPsychology and Trust policies and procedures.

9. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OFRESPONSIBILITY

Clinical

1. To provide specialist psychologicalassessments of patients referred to the service, based upon the appropriateuse, interpretation and integration of highly complex data from a variety ofsources including neuropsychological and psychological tests, self-reportmeasures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations andsemi-structured interviews with patients, family members and others involvedin the patients care.

2. To formulate, develop and implementplans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a patientspsychological problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of thepatients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy,across the full range of care settings.

3. To be responsible for implementing arange of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families andgroups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis,adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon differentexplanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.

4. To evaluate and make decisions abouttreatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic modelsand highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processesthat have shaped the individual, family or group.

5. To exercise autonomous professionalresponsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whoseproblems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.

6. To provide highly specialisedpsychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionalscontributing directly to patients formulation, diagnosis and treatmentplans.

7. To ensure that all relevantprofessionals have access to a psychologically based framework forunderstanding and care of patients of the service, through the provision ofadvice and consultation and the dissemination of psychological research andtheory.

8. To undertake risk assessment and riskmanagement for individual patients and to provide general advice to otherprofessionals on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management withparticular reference to deliberate self-harm.

9. To act as care co-ordinator, whereappropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of careplans under enhanced CPA (or its equivalent in the acute physical health caresetting) including patients, their carers, referring agents and othersinvolved in the network of care.

10. To communicate in a skilled andsensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation andtreatment plans of patients under their care and to monitor and evaluateprogress during the course of care.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Post graduate doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology, as accredited by the British Psychological Society
  • Completion of formal clinical supervisor training sufficient to be able to supervise doctoral trainees
  • Registration as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist with Health and Care Professions Council (or other domain title as agreed)
  • Further training in a specialised area of clinical practice through formal post- doctoral training (diploma or equivalent) or a portfolio of short courses and supervised practice-based learning
  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
Experience
  • Registration as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist with Health and Care Professions Council (or other domain title as agreed)
  • Experience of working with a variety of patient groups, across the wholelife course, presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity
  • Qualified experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams and supervising healthcare staff
  • Experience of working with adults with the health condition(s) covered by the designated clinical speciality/area
