Job description

A Vacancy at Northumbria Healthcare - NHCT Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

The post involves working as an integral member of the Bariatric Surgery team to deliver psychological care to patients pre- and post-bariatric surgery. The service is committed to developing a quality service that considers service users' psychological needs and embeds psychological principles into service delivery and pathways. The bariatric MDT is a supportive team that values the role of psychology within the pathway.

The post holder's clinical work will be based with the NHCT Bariatric Service, a Tier 4 specialist service based in the Trust's Surgical Business Unit. The role involves applying a psychological framework to employment and service delivery, with employment through the Clinical Health Psychology services grouping, linked to the Tier 3 Adult Weight Management Service.

The service is provided across the Trust's geographical area, primarily based in Monkseaton, North Tyneside. Consultations are offered remotely or in person. Flexible working arrangements are possible, including some remote work. The service setup requires working on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The Bariatric Psychology service aims to develop a service aligned with BOMSS endorsed guidelines for psychological provision pre- and post-operation. This role reflects a commitment to service development and potential further transformation.

The post holder will uphold values of health inclusion. As a senior clinician, you will work autonomously with guidance and development opportunities, supported by line management and clinical supervision, within a supportive team environment.

Northumbria Healthcare manages hospitals in North Tyneside, Wansbeck, Hexham, and smaller community hospitals, covering a large geographical area. The trust is known for innovation, quality, and supporting staff and patients. The area offers a high quality of life, with excellent schools, history, and amenities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting individuals on the bariatric surgery pathway with assessment, formulation, and interventions pre- and post-surgery.
  • Conducting comprehensive pre-surgical psychological assessments and consultations.
  • Preparing service users for surgery, exploring psychological difficulties, and focusing on emotional and behavioral changes post-surgery.
  • Providing assessments for revisional bariatric surgery if needed.
  • Preparing detailed pre-surgery reports with recommendations for patient safety and MDT decision-making.
  • Collaborating closely with the MDT, including surgeons, nurses, dietitians, and pharmacists.
  • Attending MDT meetings and contributing to decision-making.
  • Providing psychological assessments and interventions for post-operative patients up to two years post-surgery.
  • Supervising assistant psychologists, trainees, and other professionals.
  • Participating in service audits, evaluations, and wider projects.
  • Contributing to pathway development and training within the service.
  • Maintaining own professional development with supervision.
