About the Opportunity

Jacobs is recruiting a Principal Civil Engineer for our Nuclear Power and Engineering Technical Services (NPETS) business. NPETS is entering an exciting phase, supporting our key clients’ UK nuclear fleet through transformation and aiding new small modular reactor developers. Our work spans New Build, Generation, Life Extension, and Defueling, with high demand across the nuclear sector.

This role can be based in one of our NPETS offices (Newcastle, Warrington, Knutsford, Gloucester, or Dorchester). We prioritize flexibility and are happy to consider flexible working arrangements. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Leading multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-profile projects, managing programs and resources to meet deadlines and budgets.
  2. Owning technical challenges, developing strategies, and engaging with stakeholders to implement solutions.
  3. Producing and reviewing design deliverables such as assumption notes, technical specifications, and calculation notes.
  4. Directing analysis tasks and reviewing safety case inputs, including Safety Functional Requirements (SFRs), Structural Design Method Statements (SDMSs), and Design Substantiation Reports (DSRs).
  5. Reviewing and justifying design decisions with the Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR).
  6. Fulfilling CDM responsibilities and supporting fee proposal preparations.
  7. Developing and maintaining client relationships to grow the portfolio.

Qualifications include:

  1. MEng, MSc, BEng, or BSc in Civil Engineering or a relevant field.
  2. Chartered status with a recognized institution (e.g., ICE or IStructE).
  3. Ability to lead and collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams.
  4. Strong understanding of structural theory and problem-solving skills.
  5. Experience in civil engineering design/construction using Eurocodes (and preferably American codes).
  6. Proven experience in heavy infrastructure projects, especially in nuclear or regulated industries.
  7. Experience with finite element modelling software, validation, and verification of outputs.
  8. Knowledge of BIM environment design tools.
  9. Problem-solving skills with a solutions-oriented approach.
  10. Understanding of UK Nuclear Regulatory processes in civil engineering (highly desirable).
  11. Experience with ONR Generic Design Assessment (highly desirable).
