Job summary

Amey is seeking a Permanent Principal Building Surveyor to join our Advisory team in the UK. You will lead complex building surveying commissions, manage multidisciplinary teams and drive business development and client engagement.

You will provide technical leadership, oversee budgets and project delivery while maintaining high standards of professional conduct and compliance with regulations.

Title: Principal Building Surveyor

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Principal Building Surveyor to join our Advisory team - a vibrant, inclusive community that celebrates our differences and makes a real impact across the UK.

The Role

As a Principal Building Surveyor, you will act as a technical leader within the business, providing expert advice, guidance and supervision to technical teams, operational managers, clients and suppliers. You will lead the delivery of complex building surveying commissions, manage multidisciplinary teams and take responsibility for the commercial performance of projects within your portfolio. You will also play an important role in client engagement, business development and work-winning activities.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • Act as a technical team leader, providing advice, guidance and supervision to technical teams, operational managers, clients and suppliers.
  • Lead the preparation and checking of technical reports, specifications, drawings, schedules of work and project documentation.
  • Take responsibility for the commercial success of projects within your portfolio, including budget control and management of project delivery costs.
  • Manage and influence multidisciplinary teams across multiple projects, offices and client accounts.
  • Lead and deliver a wide range of professional building surveying services including condition surveys, measured surveys, defect diagnosis, dilapidations and Party Wall matters.
  • Prepare specifications for remedial and improvement works and oversee their delivery through to completion.
  • Act as Contract Administrator and provide project management support across refurbishment, maintenance and capital works projects.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, consultants and suppliers, building strong relationships and providing trusted technical advice.
  • Present technical proposals, project updates and recommendations to clients and key stakeholders.
  • Lead and contribute significantly to bid preparation, framework submissions and wider work-winning activities.
  • Manage project risks and ensure appropriate mitigation measures are identified and implemented throughout project lifecycles.
  • Act as Principal Designer where required and support compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
  • Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, planning requirements and other relevant legislation.
  • Lead project teams in the delivery of projects across a variety of sectors and complex operational environments.
  • Undertake site inspections, surveys and temporary site-based assignments where required.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and professional development support to junior colleagues.
  • Undertake people management responsibilities when required by the business.
What You Will Bring To Us
  • Professionally qualified with a relevant degree and Chartered membership of RICS, CIOB or an equivalent professional institution.
  • Significant post-qualification experience within a building surveying consultancy environment.
  • Extensive experience delivering professional and project-based building surveying services.
  • Broad experience across key building surveying disciplines, including defect diagnosis, condition surveys, measured surveys, dilapidations, Party Wall matters and specification writing.
  • Excellent understanding of building construction technology and building pathology.
  • Strong knowledge of contract administration and project delivery.
  • Thorough understanding of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
  • Experience undertaking duties associated with the Principal Designer role.
  • Strong understanding of Building Regulations and other relevant statutory requirements.
  • Excellent knowledge of design, specification and project delivery processes.
  • Advanced capability in relevant surveying software and analytical tools.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to engage clients and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong commercial awareness and experience managing project budgets and financial performance.
  • Experience managing project-related health, safety and welfare requirements.
  • Strong leadership and influencing skills with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to build and leverage professional networks to support project delivery and business growth.
Desirable
  • Experience working across Public Sector, Commercial, Defence, Justice, Education, Highways or Rail environments.
  • Previous experience acting as Building Surveying Lead or Technical Lead on major projects.
  • Proven track record of successful bid leadership and work-winning activities.
  • Experience managing teams across multiple locations and projects.
  • Previous people management responsibility for technical teams.
  • Experience mentoring colleagues and supporting professional development initiatives.
  • Established industry network with demonstrable business development success.
