Principal Auditor, Birmingham, Home Working, £24.44 per hour, Interim

Are you an experienced audit professional ready to take the next step in your career? Birmingham City Council is seeking a Principal Auditor to join their team and play a key role in delivering high-quality internal audit and counter fraud services across the Council. As a Principal Auditor, you will provide independent assurance to senior leaders and elected members on the effectiveness of risk management, governance, and internal control processes. You'll lead complex audit reviews, support fraud investigations, and contribute to the development of innovative audit strategies.

This role is paying up to £24.44 per hour and will be mainly home-based with some travel to Birmingham City Centre.

The key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Lead and deliver complex audit assignments with minimal supervision
  • Investigate suspected fraud and irregularities, liaising with management and external bodies
  • Present evidence at hearings and tribunals, and liaise with the Police where necessary
  • Develop strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Produce clear, concise reports with actionable recommendations
  • Support the Group Auditor in planning and delivering sections of the audit plan
  • Supervise and mentor junior auditors, ensuring quality and performance standards are met
In order to be successful in this role, you will have:
  • Extensive experience in internal audit or counter fraud, including complex assignments
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience of leading audits and managing staff
  • Proficiency in computer-based auditing tools and techniques
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
