Job description

Location: Rowanfield Special School 67C Groathill Road Edinburgh, EH4 2SA

Primary Teacher
Rowanfield School

Salary: £33,594 - £50,589
Hours: 35 per week

Opened in 2002, Rowanfield Special School (Primary) is situated in the north of Edinburgh and is part of the Craigroyston High School learning community. The school meets the additional support needs of children aged 5-12 with a wide range of barriers to learning.

The school serves a broad area, with pupils travelling from across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Pupils are placed in school following a referral to The Education Placement Group (EPG).

There are 12 teaching staff (including Head Teacher, Deputy Head, and 2 Part-Time teachers). They are supported by 25 support staff, including Pupil Support Workers, Pupil Support Officers, an Administrator, a Business Manager, and therapy pets Pepsi and Tango.

We work closely with Allied Health Professionals and outside agencies such as NHS SLT, Spartans, CAMHS, Youth Music Initiative, Drake Music, and Queen Margaret University.

Our current school community has a very neurodivergent population. Six classes (Willow & Hawthorn) have pupils with a broad range of social and emotional needs, many of whom have experienced trauma, been out of full-time education for extended periods, and face complex barriers to learning. Each class has a maximum of 6 pupils supported by dedicated support staff. Additionally, three communication classes (Sycamore) primarily serve pupils with complex language and communication difficulties, such as ASD and developmental delay.

We are seeking an enthusiastic teacher with experience or a passion to make a difference in children's lives. The successful candidate will actively participate in all activities with pupils, possess a strong knowledge of the curriculum, demonstrate excellent teaching practice, and have experience with diverse needs. An understanding of how adult behavior influences school environment, a track record of building relationships, and raising attainment are essential. Most importantly, the candidate should have a sense of humor, think creatively, and be prepared for rewarding challenges.

Salaries will be in accordance with the Scheme of Salaries and Conditions of Service for Teaching Staff in School Education.

This post involves regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The successful candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo an update check. If the candidate has spent three or more months outside the UK in the last five years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory pre-employment checks.

We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements.
