Job description

Behaviour Support Mentor

North Manchester Full-Time Long-Term Role Aspire People

Aspire People are seeking a dedicated Behaviour Support Mentor / Teaching Assistant to work with two Year 6 pupils at one of our partnered schools in North Manchester.

The successful candidate will provide individualised support throughout the school day, with the role split between two pupils who require different approaches to behaviour, emotional regulation, and classroom engagement.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building meaningful relationships with children and young people and who can use their interests, personality, and experience to help pupils overcome barriers to learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Providing consistent 1:1 support to two Year 6 pupils
  • Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour
  • Helping pupils remain engaged and access classroom learning
  • Encouraging pupils to follow routines and school expectations
  • Supporting pupils during periods of frustration or heightened emotions
  • Helping pupils develop confidence, independence, and resilience
  • Encouraging positive relationships with staff and peers
  • Working closely with class teachers and the wider school team
  • Adapting support strategies to meet individual needs
The Support Required

One pupil may display challenging behaviour, including leaving the classroom or struggling to remain settled. This pupil will need a calm and consistent adult who can build trust, maintain boundaries, and support them without escalating situations.

The second pupil is sociable and friendly but may require support when becoming frustrated or emotionally heightened. The successful candidate will help the pupil recognise their emotions, reset when needed, and return to learning positively.

Both pupils benefit from adults who take time to understand their interests and build relationships beyond the classroom. A background in sports coaching, youth work, mentoring, behaviour support, or working with young people would be particularly relevant. Someone who enjoys football, sport, or active activities may find these shared interests a useful way to develop rapport.

The Ideal Candidate
  • Experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour
  • Knowledge or experience of SEND, SEMH, or emotional regulation
  • Experience providing 1:1 support
  • A background in teaching assistance, youth work, sports coaching, mentoring, or behaviour support
  • A calm and patient approach
  • Strong relationship-building skills
  • The confidence to remain consistent when behaviour becomes challenging
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a wider school team
  • A genuine commitment to helping pupils succeed

Previous school experience is desirable, but candidates with strong transferable experience will also be considered.

Aspire People is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils and expects every candidate to share this commitment. Placements are subject, to appropriate Child Protection screening, including checks with former employers and the Disclosure and Barring Checks.
