About the role

Balfour Beatty is recruiting a Primary Design Engineer for our Power, Transmission and Distribution offices in Newcastle.

The main function is to engineer HV Primary Engineering designs for electrical substation projects up to 400kV.

The role includes General, Planning, and Procurement responsibilities for substation project delivery.

What you'll be doing

General Responsibilities:

• Ensure duties comply with company Quality, Health & Safety, Environmental Procedures, and Business Processes.
• Take ownership of your technical development for continuous improvement.
• Perform work to a high technical standard with thorough self-checking within deadlines.

Planning Responsibilities:

• Coordinate contract requirements with Project Manager, customer, suppliers, and departments upon contract award.
• Control, update, and report workload progress, estimating completion and highlighting issues to senior engineers.

Design Responsibilities:

• Identify standards and customer requirements, ensuring compliance with standards, legislation, and specifications.
• Design with regard to Health, Safety & Environmental Procedures, including Designer Risk Assessments as per CDM regulations.
• Participate in Design Reviews, Construction Support, and Contract Close-out Meetings.
• Collaborate with Designers and Technicians on calculations and drawings, including suppliers.
• Prepare drawings/models and perform design checks for customer/sub-contractor interfaces.
• Assist in preparing installation and commissioning packages aligned with schedules.

Who we're looking for

Education:

• BEng/BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering or higher; BEng/BSc preferred.
• Experience in designing electrical power systems and components.
• Proficiency in calculations demonstrating design integrity.
• Experience with AC/DC supplies in substation environments (e.g., batteries, generators, DNO supplies).
• Microsoft Office skills.
