About the role

Balfour Beatty is recruiting a Primary Design Engineer to work within our Power, Transmission and Distribution offices in Newcastle.

The main function of the role is to engineer HV Primary Engineering designs for electrical substation projects up to 400kV.

The role also includes general, planning, and procurement responsibilities for substation project delivery.

What you'll be doing

General Responsibilities:

• Ensure all duties comply with Company Quality, Health & Safety, Environmental Procedures, and Business Process Manual.
• Take ownership of your technical development to ensure continuous improvement.
• Perform work to a high technical standard with thorough self-checking within delivery timescales.

Planning Responsibilities:

• Coordinate contract requirements with the Project Manager, customer, suppliers, and other departments upon contract award.
• Control, update, and report on workload progress, providing estimates and highlighting potential delivery issues.

Design Responsibilities:

• Identify relevant standards and customer requirements, ensuring compliance with standards, legislation, and specifications.
• Design with regard to Health, Safety & Environmental Procedures, including Designer Risk Assessments as per CDM regulations.
• Participate in Design Reviews, Construction Support, and Contract Close-out Meetings.
• Coordinate with other Designers, Technicians, and Suppliers on calculations and drawings.
• Prepare drawings/models and perform design checks for customer/sub-contractor submissions.
• Assist in preparing installation and commissioning packages aligned with site schedules.

Who we're looking for

Education:

• BEng/BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering or higher; BEng/BSc preferred.
• Experience in designing electrical power systems and components.
• Ability to perform calculations demonstrating design integrity.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Experience with AC/DC supplies in substation environments, such as batteries, generators, DNO supplies, etc.
