Job Description

Primary Electrical Design Engineer

Role Overview

As a valued member of the Civil and Electrical Design team, you will be responsible for developing a variety of electrical layouts and designs. These include substation configurations (AIS/GIS up to 400kV), cable route plans, LV layouts, switch room and control room equipment layouts, and site earthing arrangements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create detailed electrical site layouts, considering adoptable and private assets, and ensure seamless integration of external connections to equipment and plant.
  • Apply comprehensive knowledge of engineering standards such as ENATS, NGTS, BS standards, and G81 guidelines, ensuring compliance with approved equipment specifications.
  • Contribute to the creation of specifications for major components, including disconnectors, CTs, VTs, circuit breakers, and surge arrestors.
  • Design support structures for AIS equipment (66kV-400kV), collaborating with manufacturers to communicate requirements and review technical documentation.
  • Perform busbar calculations to evaluate factors such as short circuit forces, wind, and ice loads, determining optimal sizing and support needs.
  • Develop site earthing layouts from first principles, ensuring designs are verified by specialists.
  • Prepare ducting and cabling layouts in coordination with other engineering disciplines, with expertise in installation methods for voltages ranging from 11kV to 132kV and ideally up to 400kV.

About You

We are looking for an experienced and proactive professional who can bring valuable skills to the team. To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • A degree, HND, or HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems ).
  • Previous experience in primary electrical design within a consultancy, contractor, or utility environment in the power industry.
  • Expertise inHV AC power system design, including the development of layouts for:
    • 11kV and 22kV distribution networks
    • 33kV switchrooms and control rooms
    • 66kV and 132kV AIS substations
  • A strong understanding of HV and EHV substation installation standards and specifications.
  • A proactive and solution-focused approach, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Detailed knowledge of cable installation techniques, including flexible and rigid arrangements, as well as minimum bending radii.
