Job description

Job Description Summary

Become part of a winning team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition. The North and South Europe Grid System Integration (GSI) team designs and delivers a wide range of high voltage AC and DC transmission projects, and is looking for a “Primary and Plant Design - Verification and Validation” Engineer to join the team. These large and complex projects have many design elements and requirements, and it is critical that all the design work undertaken fully takes into account the complete range of needs and delivers a design that meets its functional objectives. As a “Primary and Plant Design - Verification and Validation Engineer”, you will be responsible for reviewing the primary station design, and associated plant and equipment, across a range of projects, and assessing whether it meets the required quality, safety, customer and regulatory standards, and fully satisfy the operational needs of the Customer. Should any area of concern be identified, you will work closely with, and advise the design team, on the best way to resolve the issue.

Role Overview

The “Primary and Plant Design - Verification and Validation Engineer”, while being independent from the project team, will work with the engineering leader on each project to develop a specific design quality plan. This plan will define the actions and ‘hold points’ where the “Primary and Plant V&V Engineer” will review elements of the design and provide approval before proceeding to the next phase, along with the identification of any areas of risk or complexity that requires additional focus. These actions will be a mix of independent assessment of design information, and the attendance at key design reviews. In addition, the V&V Engineer shall advise the design team as the work progresses and investigate any non-conformances for the purpose of continuous improvement. This systematic approach shall be organised in a way to ensure that the design meets both the customer’s specification, and it’s required electrical, mechanical & environmental characteristics or parameters. It is also required to ensure it achieves its intended primary purpose or functional requirement, has alignment with other preceding or corresponding aspects of the design, and is interfaced correctly with other related disciplines. In addition to ensuring the design fulfils its operational requirements, it is essential to make sure it can be constructed in an efficient and practical manner, it contains all necessary provision to undertake the required maintenance activities, and contains the necessary safety systems to allow this to be done safely. Finally, all the design work undertaken shall, as far as reasonably practicable, be hazard free, and not present any risks to the operatives that will construct, operate, maintain and decommission it.

Responsibilities

To succeed in this role, you will have the following qualifications and experience: A minimum of a first degree in Power Engineering or a related electrical engineering discipline. (Or a significant amount of relevant experience which can be considered as an equivalent) Significant and demonstrated years’ experience working in a senior role where your daily activities are working in either the design, or reviewing of, high voltage substation layouts, plant designs and the associated activities

You will have an excellent working knowledge of the following topics:

  • The layout and arrangement of high voltage Substations (Above 132kV) using both AIS and GIS technology.
  • The electrical, mechanical and environment performance requirements of high voltage substations, and the application parameters of the switchgear used to facilitate the primary system.
  • The application design of the auxiliary plant used to create the sub-systems within a high voltage substation environment.
  • The design and performance of high voltage earthing grids.

You will also have a solid understanding of the following topics:

  • The way in which high voltage substations are constructed, particularly in the case of brownfield sites, and how this requirement is supported within the design.
  • The way in which high voltage substations are maintained and the facilities needed within the design to enable this maintenance to be performed in a safe and practical manner.
Desired Characteristics

The successful candidate will be an experienced and proven substation design engineer who has been part of the successful delivery of a significant portfolio of high voltage substation projects. You will be familiar with the electro-mechanical considerations of high voltage electrical engineering and be comfortable designing the primary heavy current system, and the application of the plant and equipment needed to facilitate them. You will be comfortable reviewing designs, both as a desk-top exercise and also as an independent expert at design reviews, and be able to clearly articulate to the designers any areas where you consider adjustments or changes are required. You will be a team player, with good communication and interpersonal skills, be capable of self-management, and have a high degree of flexibility, resilience and a self-learning attitude.
