Job description
Overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a highly enthusiastic individual to join our pharmacy team and train as a Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician. Pharmacy Technicians are invaluable in the healthcare industry and highly sought after. As a Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician, you will spend 2 years working towards achieving the Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians. This course is recognised by the GPhC and once awarded, you will be able to register as a Pharmacy Technician. The course consists of a mixture of college-based assignments and completing a portfolio of evidence-based competencies. Applicants are encouraged to visit to explore the role and department prior to interview.

Responsibilities
  • To attend college one day per week to obtain the knowledge required to complete the BTEC qualification.
  • To work closely with your assessor / Senior Pharmacy Technician for Education and Training to complete an online 'e-portfolio' of work that documents the skills you use at work and the tasks you perform.
  • To actively seek out new learning opportunities to expand your knowledge.
  • To be prepared to complete work in your own time at home.
  • To contribute actively and constructively towards a working environment that encourages teamwork, mutual support and excellence in service delivery.
  • Under the supervision of a Pharmacist, the dispensing of various types of medication such as clinical trials, controlled drugs, inpatient medication requests and outpatient prescriptions.
  • To perform medicines reconciliation on the wards.
  • Be responsible for the ordering, receipt and housekeeping of pharmaceutical stock.
  • Accurately check dispensed medications.
  • Undertake any training required as discussed in your annual personal development review.
  • Follow documented standard operating procedures (SOPs) and stay up to date with changes to SOPs.
  • Attend relevant study programmes agreed at annual Personal Development Review and keep updated records of Continuing Professional Development.
  • Maintain a safe system of work at all times and comply with fire, safety policies and procedure manuals.
  • Promote the professional image of pharmacy within the trust by ensuring dress and behaviour reflect professional service.
  • Work with the Trust to achieve targets, maintain KPI targets, and ensure prescription tracking is carried out at all times.
  • Supervise and assist with the training of other Senior ATOs and ATOs.
  • Participate in the Trust appraisal scheme and attend mandatory training sessions.
  • The post may require working extended hours, weekends and Bank Holidays as part of the Pharmacy rota.
Dispensary
  • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, dispense in-patient supplies including ward stock, take-home drugs and items requested by technicians, including clinical trials and unlicensed medicines.
  • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, dispense out-patient and discharge prescriptions, including Oncology, Haematology and Clinical trials, with patient counselling on storage, dosage, side effects and other information.
  • Handle payments of prescription charges accurately.
  • Support services to external hospitals, clinics and nursing homes; supply drugs to patients taking Clozaril.
  • Dispense controlled drugs under supervision.
  • Assist with extemporaneous preparation of medicines and related labelling/prefilling procedures.
  • Carry out reception duties and provide administrative support to the anticoagulant service, managing calls and appointments efficiently.
Aseptic
  • Provide support in the Aseptic unit dispensing a wide range of products.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practice and Quality Assurance; adhere to health and safety policies.
  • Follow aseptic gowning, PPE and personal hygiene guidelines.
  • Clean and sanitise specialist equipment and assist in setting up aseptic items and transfer into clean rooms.
  • Manage stock of consumables and drugs within the aseptic department; assist with microbiological monitoring programs.
Pharmacy Procurement
  • Carry out stock control and monitor stock throughout the department.
  • Provide ongoing support to the receipt and distribution of pharmacy stock; report discrepancies to the senior technician.
  • File prescriptions, orders and other documentation; check stock expiry dates and rotate stock efficiently.
  • Utilise appropriate IT systems for stock management; under supervision, check availability and place orders with local wholesalers.
Other
