Job description
Overview

Are you interested in becoming a Pharmacy Technician? We have an exciting apprenticeship opportunity for a 2-year fixed term, level 3 apprenticeship based at Fieldhead Hospital Pharmacy in Wakefield, with visits to sites in Barnsley, Dewsbury, Halifax and Huddersfield. The post offers training to register as a Pharmacy Technician on successful completion of the course.

Starting salary is NHS Band 3 equivalent £24,937 (dependent on previous NHS service). The role is full-time with day release for college via blended learning, plus allocated study time in the workplace.

Main duties and responsibilities
  • Train to be a registered Pharmacy Technician over a 2-year period, undertaking Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship Standard Level 3, including competency-based training, workplace assessment, and underpinning knowledge to gain the Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians and registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Work as part of the trust-wide pharmacy team and participate in the full range of pharmaceutical services at the Trust; contribute to the smooth running of the department and provide cover for other staff when needed.
  • Dispense clinically validated prescriptions, perform a 3-way check, and place items on the bench for final accuracy checks. Issue medication against stock orders and assist with stock control and management across dispensary, wards and departments.
  • Assist in ordering medicines and consumables; manage stock discrepancies and shortages by liaising with colleagues; undertake reception duties (phone and hatch) as required.
  • Maintain accurate records using computer equipment; communicate effectively with service users, visitors, colleagues, health professionals and external suppliers.
  • Work at other localities for training as necessary; demonstrate your role to other staff; maintain safe systems of work and follow standard operating procedures.
  • Fully participate in the learning agreement and learning experiences; promote the professional image of Pharmacy within the Trust and with the training provider; upon completion be eligible for GPhC registration.
  • Note: This is not an exhaustive list of duties; other duties may be undertaken in discussion with the manager.
Year progression and training
  • The Apprentice will progress to the second year on successful completion of the first year, under a formal learning agreement.
  • Training will be conducted to complete the Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship Standard Level 3 with an accredited training provider via blended learning; after completion, the apprentice will be able to register with the GPhC.

Person specification and requirements

Essential

  • Must be willing to complete Level 3 Diploma and be able to register with the GPhC on completion of training.
  • 4 GCSEs grade 4/C or above, including Maths, English and Science.
  • A satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years (subject to reasonable accommodations for disabilities and pregnancy).
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, be organized, self-motivated, a team player and flexible; good communication and computer skills; able to work with accuracy and good time management.

Desirable

  • IT qualification; NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services; previous experience in hospital or community pharmacy.
