Job Description:

Position: Pre-Construction Design Manager

Location: Birmingham

Company: One of the UK’s Leading Tier 1 Main Contractors

About the Company:

We’re proud to be working in partnership with one of the UK’s most respected and well-established Main Contractors, boasting a turnover of just under £1bn and a proven track record of delivering landmark commercial projects. With five regional offices across the UK, this company continues to lead from the front in innovation, quality, and scale of delivery.

Due to continued growth and major project wins across the Midlands, the business is now looking to appoint a Pre-Construction Design Manager to be based out of their Birmingham office.

The Opportunity:

As a Pre-Construction Design Manager, you will play a pivotal role in the early design and planning stages of large-scale commercial developments (£50M – £250M). Working closely with bid teams, planners, architects, consultants, and clients, you will shape project designs that are not only technically robust but also commercially viable and deliverable.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to step up into a leadership role, with a clear pathway to manage and grow a team of design professionals within a forward-thinking regional office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design management process during the pre-construction phase on major commercial projects.
  • Work closely with internal departments including planning, estimating, and bid management.
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, and supply chain partners to develop efficient and innovative design solutions.
  • Ensure all design outputs align with cost plans, programme, buildability, and client expectations.
  • Contribute to bid strategies and attend interviews/presentations with clients.
  • Mentor junior members of the team with a view to building a dedicated design team.

About You:

  • Proven experience in design management at pre-construction stage, ideally within a main contractor environment.
  • Strong understanding of RIBA stages, D&B contracts, and technical compliance.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills.
  • Ambitious, driven, and ready to take the next step in your career.
  • Degree qualified in architecture, engineering, construction management or similar field.

Why Join?

  • Be part of a high-performing regional office with the support of a national leader.
  • Join a business with a strong pipeline of prestigious projects.
  • Clear and structured path to leadership and progression.
  • Work on landmark schemes that shape city skylines.
  • Competitive package including bonus, car allowance, pension, private healthcare, and flexible working.
