An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist in Special Care Dentistry to join our service in north London. The post-holder will be responsible for the specialist treatment of patients referred to the service, as well as providing clinical leadership for the development of special care dentistry in north west London.

Main duties of the job

The majority of the post will involve providing specialist clinical care but there will also be responsibilities in the areas of clinical governance, training, management and supervision. Key requirements for the post are significant experience managing a wide range of complex special care patients, including treatment under IV sedation and GA , good communication skills and a pragmatic and proactive mindset. Note discussion on additional hours is possible.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To provide specialist clinical care to adults with special care needs. Patients may be referred by community dentists, general dental practitioners, and hospital consultants, in addition to those referred from staff in the health, local authority and voluntary sectors.
  • To provide a comprehensive dental treatment service for patients who require special care, including the development of integrated care pathways across primary, secondary and social care
  • To manage the delivery of special care dentistry and to ensure that treatment is provided safely, effectively and This will include ensuring that the appropriate monitoring and resuscitation equipment is available.
  • To provide clinical care under sedation, and/or general anaesthesia in conjunction with the Hospital Dental Service (HDS), when required
  • To demonstrate professional and clinical leadership
  • To comply with all relevant professional and Trust policies, guidelines and standards
  • To provide clinical cover, when required, in health centres other than their base clinic, and in other settings such as care homes and hospital
  • To provide clinical supervision of junior staff, including trainees in special care dentistry
  • To carry out appraisals of the work of junior colleagues
  • To demonstrate leadership in the development of special care dentistry locally, making presentations to stakeholders and commissioners where appropriate
  • To take on management roles as part of the senior leadership team in Dental Services
  • To work with colleagues in other sectors of dentistry to ensure that adults with special needs receive high quality care in the most appropriate setting. This may involve working with colleagues in secondary care, and on a pan-London basis
  • To provide training and advice to post-graduate students and trainees in the speciality when requested

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Eligible for full GDC registration
  • On NHS Performers List
  • On the GDC specialist list in Special Care Dentistry
  • Post-graduate qualification/s relevant to Special Care Dentistry
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Special Care Dentistry

Experience

  • Experience or training such that the applicant has reached a standard equivalent to that expected after 3 years of specialist training in Special Care Dentistry
  • Additional NHS experience in Special Care Dentistry following the attainment of the above standard
  • Extensive experience in the clinical management of a wide range of special care patients
  • Experience of providing dental treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia

Research Teaching Presenting

  • Experience of presentations to key audiences
  • Experience of providing teaching and /or training in the NHS
  • Experience of clinical supervision
  • Experience of postgraduate teaching
  • Experience of research relevant to Special Care Dentistry

Audit and Quality Improvement

  • Experience of involvement in clinical governance and risk management
  • An understanding of the indicators of quality relevant to NHS services
  • Experience of audit

Communication

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills – written and verbal
  • Excellent interpersonal, team-working and leadership skills

Managemnt and Leadership

  • Experience of either assessing, appraising or managing staff
  • Experience of project management
  • Experience of policy and procedure development associated with speciality
