Job overview

This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic and skilled practitioner psychologist / psychotherapist within our liaison mental health service at King’s College Hospital. The successful candidate will be joining a team that recognises the unique contribution and clear benefits that integrated psychological approaches can bring.

The liaison psychiatry service at KCH includes the adult inpatient liaison team, the older adult inpatient liaison team, and the mental health liaison team (within KCH emergency department).

With support from the Principal Clinical Psychologist and senior colleagues in liaison services, the post-holder will support rapid access to direct psychological intervention, and to training, consultation and case discussion.

Main duties of the job

The Practitioner Psychologist / Psychotherapist role will work alongside the Principal Psychologist within the team to ensure the continued development, co-ordination and systematic provision of specialist psychological assessments and interventions for individuals within the adult inpatient liaison team, the older adult liaison inpatient team, and the mental health liaison team.

There is clear recognition within the liaison psychiatry service of the benefits that integrated psychological approaches can bring, including expertise in constructing psychological formulations that encompass patients’ medical, psychological and social needs, and their health-related beliefs.

Qualifications
  • Entry-level qualification in Applied Psychology (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level additional training) that has been accepted by the HCPC for purposes of professional registration (Doctoral trainees in their final months of gaining their qualification will also be considered); and/or appropriate post-graduate Psychotherapy qualification that confers registration with the relevant accreditation body (e.g., BACP, BABCP, UKCP)
  • Registered with the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist, or registration and full accreditation as a Psychotherapist with BACP, UKCP or BABCP and evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC
Experience
  • Experience of psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature
  • Experience that supports working with, and addressing issues of, diversity within local communities.
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams with colleagues from a range of disciplines
Knowledge
  • Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for the relevant treatment
  • Knowledge of psychological assessment and clinical psychometrics.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues.
Skills
  • To communicate skilfully and sensitively complex and sensitive information with clients, carers and colleagues.
  • To plan and schedule assessment and interventions for individual clients and groups.
  • Skills in the use of methods of psychological assessments and intervention.
Abilities
  • Ability to work effectively within complex multi-disciplinary and multi-agency environments.
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate.
