Job summary

Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Clinical/Counselling/Health Psychologist to join the Psychological Health Service in an 0.9 whole time equivalent Band 7 post. You’ll work across Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre and Weston General Hospital, with opportunities to influence care pathways and staff support, including supervision and training.

The role covers direct clinical work with adults on the cancer pathway, with flexible working options and a strong commitment to work-life

Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualification in clinical, counselling or health psychology recognised for HCPC registration, or about to qualify.
• Current HCPC registration as Practitioner Psychologist or imminent registration.

Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a clinical, counselling or health psychologist to work in a leading adult oncology and haematology service. The post holder will be closely supported by colleagues within an established and highly valued and supportive psychological health service.

You will have a wide range of direct clinical work covering all parts of the adult cancer pathway across different tumour sites and teams. You will be offered opportunities to contribute to the compassionate care of staff, through clinical supervision, as well as supporting our wide ranging training programme.

There are excellent facilities to support this role, with dedicated administrative support and clinical space within Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre and Weston General Hospital. We offer a very supportive Psychological Health Services group across the Trust, with strong links to regional and national networks.

Main duties of the job

The total hours currently available are 33.75 (0.9wte). If full time hours are desirable there may be opportunities to pick up additional hours on a fixed term basis.

This role covers the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Hospital (BHOC) and Weston General Hospital (WGH) and therefore requires the post holder to travel to both sites. The role requires availability on Tuesdays and Fridays, other days to be negotiated based on working patterns and sites. Candidates invited to interview will be asked to express their preference for working hours.

Interviews will be conducted on Thursday 1st October

• To provide specialist psychological services, including assessment, formulation and implementation of psychological interventions for people over the age of 16 affected by cancer and haematological disorders. To deliver these services in both ward-based and out-patient settings as needed. To undertake or support research and audit relevant to care pathways.
• To propose changes for service development, guidelines and protocols relevant to psychological health across these care pathways to the relevant Specialist Clinical Psychologist or Head of Services.

Education and Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualification in clinical, counselling or health psychology recognised for registration by the HCPC as Practitioner Psychologist – Clinical/Counselling/Health Psychologist. Or about to qualify as Clinical/Counselling/Health Psychologist
• Current registration with HCPC
• Current full UK driving licence

Experience

• Experience of clinical work with adults and older adults providing psychological assessments and interventions
• Experience of providing psychological consultation, supervision and training to multi-professional and multi-agency teams
• Experience of clinical work within a health care setting, with individuals who have an acute/long-term medical conditions
• Experience of undertaking consultation and service development work within a multi-disciplinary physical health setting
• Experience of working with adults who require mental health care under community mental health services
• Experience of supervising others
• Experience of working with people in end of life care.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology
• Formal teaching / presentation sessions to health and other professionals.
• Demonstrable knowledge of legislation and guidance pertaining to safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults, consent, confidentiality and standards of psychological care within relevant NICE and other guidance
• Able to work in a specialist team providing a service consistent with the Psychological Health Services
• Able to assess the psychological needs of adults and older adults, including the use of cognitive and psychometric tests
• Able to generate systemic and individual formulations and interventions based on applying psychological theory to the complex information generated by the person, family, health and social care systems relating to individuals engaging in care pathways
• Able to demonstrate an understanding of the range of psychological implications of engagement with these care pathways for individuals and their families
• Able to demonstrate an understanding of the roles of a practitioner psychologist in relation to a patient, their family, the staff teams and the wider organisational systems around them
• Able to demonstrate successful use of strategies to prioritise and manage time when there are conflicting demands
• Advanced communication skills with the ability to provide and receive highly complex and sensitive information to and from young people/adults in a culturally appropriate manner in highly emotive situations. This will include the ability to provide complex psychological information to staff in an accessible manner.
• Ability to access, record and manage information and data pertaining to the work undertaken in medical and psychology notes, data bases and electronic records as required
• Able to demonstrate a realistic awareness of the potential for work related stress and distress in this type of clinical work plus strategies to manage this
• Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, contributing to effective team functioning and holding team roles
• Able to travel to all Trust sites (Weston, Bristol, South Bristol, Southmead) regularly and across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire occasionally
• To be proficient in the administration of psychometric and neuropsychological tests, including those that require complex manipulation of test materials
• Ability to drive is desirable
