Job description

Working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the post holder will ensure nursing services are delivered effectively to the entitled patient population. The practice nurse will be responsible for various clinical areas such as infection prevention and control, health promotion, chronic disease management, health prevention, well women and well man clinics, as well as supporting the practice management team in reviewing and delivering clinical policy and procedures.

Main duties of the job

The following are the core responsibilities of the practice nurse:

  • Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs
  • Cytology
  • Removal of Sutures
  • Travel Clinic
  • ECGs
  • Asthma/Peak Flow Readings/Spirometry
  • Venepuncture
  • Ear syringing
  • Routine immunizations/Childhood immunisations
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
  • Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings
  • Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs
  • Interest in Diabetes or Coronary Heart Disease and Contraception

Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate.

Job responsibilities
  • Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by nurses and GPs
  • Maintaining GP and nurses' rooms, stocking and rotating items as required
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients who are being examined by another clinician
  • Maintaining general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms
  • Maintaining stock of waiting room leaflets as instructed by partners and the Practice Manager
  • Ordering health promotion literature
  • Ordering stock from the District Hospital
  • Ordering vaccinations to maintain stock levels
  • Participating in administrative systems within the practice
  • Maintaining accurate records at all times
  • Advising senior nurses of potential problems or errors within assigned tasks
  • Managing DOAC Monitoring Books
  • Handling recalls and searches
  • Attending and participating in practice meetings as required
  • Performing any other delegated duties appropriate to the post, including knowledge and procedures.
