Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, experienced and dedicated Practice Nurse to join our GP Practice and work as part of our team, alongside our doctors, paramedics, ANP, Pharmacists, Health Care Assistants and GP Assistant.

The role is part‑time with 16 to 20 hours per week, negotiable within this range.

Practice Nurse Responsibilities

The Practice Nurse will be responsible for a number of clinical areas such as:

  • Infection prevention and control
  • Health promotion and health prevention
  • Chronic disease management
  • Well Women and Well Man clinics
  • Cervical smears, childhood immunisations
  • Providing assessment, screening and treatment services, and health education advice
  • Providing nursing treatments in partnership with GPs or independently to agreed protocols
  • Providing general and specific health screenings with referral to GPs when necessary
  • Advise patients on general healthcare and minor ailments with referral to GPs as necessary
  • Routine tasks may include, but are not limited to:
  • Chronic disease management and review (including diabetes, hypertension, CKD, dementia, asthma, COPD, cancer, palliative and mental health)
  • Disease prevention and screening (cervical smears, smoking cessation, immunisations and vaccines, obesity, alcohol, etc.)
  • Other nursing procedures (health measurements, etc.)

Supplies and equipment: Maintain the treatment room and other areas, including cold chain maintenance and vaccine storage. Ensure clinical rooms are left clean, tidy and waste is disposed of according to practice policy.

Pathological specimens and investigatory procedures: Undertake the collection, storage and dispatch of pathological specimens, including intravenous blood samples, swabs, smears, etc., and perform any investigatory procedures requested by the GPs.

Administrative responsibilities: Record accurate notes for all consultations and treatments in the clinical computer system and complete all required documentation associated with patient healthcare and registration. Maintain statistical information for regular and ad hoc reports and attend and participate in practice meetings as required.

Assist in the formulation of practice philosophy, strategy and policy and develop appropriate protocols. Cooperate and participate in any research projects within the practice. Participate in the education and training of others, including induction of all members of practice staff with special responsibility for nursing staff.

Qualifications
  • Registered first‑level nurse
  • Membership of a professional body
  • Evidence of CPD and training; qualification or evidence of experience in the management of diabetes, respiratory, family planning, wound care, cervical cytology
  • Post‑graduate diploma or degree in Chronic Disease Management
  • Diploma in Asthma/COPD/diabetes
Experience
  • Experience working within a GP Practice or Primary Care Team
