Working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the post holder will ensure nursing services are delivered effectively to the entitled patient population. The practice nurse will be responsible for various clinical areas such as infection prevention and control, health promotion, chronic disease management, health prevention, well women and well man clinics, as well as supporting the practice management team in reviewing and delivering clinical policies and procedures.
Main duties of the job
The following are the core responsibilities of the practice nurse:
- Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs
- Perform smears/cytology
- Removal of sutures
- Manage travel clinics
- Conduct ECGs
- Assess asthma/peak flow readings/spirometry
- Venipuncture
- Ear syringing
- Administer routine and childhood immunisations
- Chaperone and assist patients during examinations by other clinicians
- Assist GPs with minor surgeries and coil fittings
- Request pathology tests, such as urine cultures and swabs
- Interest in diabetes, coronary heart disease, and contraception
- Follow agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate

Job responsibilities
- Maintain and clean equipment used by nurses and GPs
- Maintain GP and nurse rooms, including stocking and rotating items as required
- Chaperone and assist patients during examinations by other clinicians
- Ensure general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses' and treatment rooms
- Maintain stock of waiting room leaflets as instructed by partners and the Practice Manager
- Order health promotion literature
- Order stock from the District Hospital
- Order vaccinations to maintain stock levels
- Participate in administrative systems within the practice
- Maintain accurate records at all times
- Notify senior nurses of potential problems or errors within assigned tasks
- Manage DOAC monitoring books
- Conduct recalls and searches
- Attend and participate in practice meetings as required
- Perform any other delegated duties appropriate to the post, including knowledge and procedures

- Experience with long-term conditions such as diabetes, asthma, COPD
